The whole hales blacklisting thing and balance never getting another chance in the test side making alot more sense if the above tweet is factual.
there's more chance of oil in my backyard than this being a factor.

I'd love for it be true, but come on.

Of course it's not bad as outright racist slurs but it is an indicator of the lack of respect and decency for Asian players.
It's basically 'your name is too difficult to pronounce and I cbf taking 3 seconds to learn so we'll just call you Steve because that's a nice white name.'

It's something plenty of ethnic minority celebs in the UK have spoken about in recent years where they've felt like they've had to betray their cultural heritage to fit in.

I thought it was that which was disrespectful in itself but it seems there might have been more as there was apparently a racist gag in the team to call all non-white players 'Kevin' etc which makes it worse than just calling someone a generic shorthand name for convenience.

The important thing is no one in the Indian team or cricketing world calls Pujara, 'Cheteshwar'. it's usually 'Puji' which is actually easier to pronounce than even Steve. You have to almost be going out of your way to be a dickhead to rename him IMO.

Rafiq has been asked about England men's Test captain Joe Root's comments that he cannot recall witnessing racism at Yorkshire.

"Rooty is a good man. He has never engaged in racist language. I found it hurtful because Rooty was Gary Ballance's housemate". Rafiq says Root was on nights out when racist language directed at his Pakistan heritage was used.

"Maybe he didn't remember it, but it just shows the institution that a good man like him can not remember those things."
To me, his comments about Root read like Root is just ignorant of the issue because he hasn't got first hand experience of it.

When Root says he doesn't remember racism at Yorkshire he's probably technically correct in that there wouldn't have been any, for lack of a better word, serious examples of racism (an example of which would be a player openly not being selected because of his skin colour), whilst being blind to more low level instances of racism because those sorts of behaviours are so normalised.

Hales track record now includes :

-Kicking a defenseless dude in the head after his mate stokes had knocked him out
-Mocking a cricketer by doing a fake cry after dropping a sitter
-Racism

Seems a lovely bloke. And yes I realise the second one is less bad but it was more annoying.
One of those things is not like the others ffs.

Hales and Ballance played 250+ combined internationals for England, leaving aside the county games. Imagine having to go on tours, sharing the dressing room, going on team nights out with 'banter' from guys like that as a non-white player...
They would have shared an international dressing room with hardly any non-white players in their time as international cricketers, which wouldn't have helped. Takes a brave man to call out dickhead behaviour in a team environment like that.

In terms of nights out etc, alcohol and the role it plays in British culture is a huge barrier to relationships between white Brits and Muslims. Other than the occasional game of 5s I lost touch with all my Muslim schoolfriends in my early 20s because my social and working life revolved around working in bars and going out and getting drunk when I wasn't working.

Whatever it takes!!!
The most sickening thing about all this, for me, is the why of it all. If there is active dispute or issues between people that leads you to insulting a man like this, it’s at least understandable to an extent (though obviously not justifiable) but you put someone through all this just because they look different or whatever. I am almost thinking it may have been better if it came out that some players felt threatened by his talent and that is why all this happened. Now there have been some stories about Rafiq not being the easiest guy to work with and him bullying the academy players etc. They may well be true, lets not assume that just because he is the victim Rafiq is incapable of saying or doing bad things. But the question has to be asked, would have been doing all this had he been treated more fairly in the first place? This is just depressing. When you let a person go through hell and there is no actual personal issues with that person, it is just so needless and petty and whatever.

I remember seeing an old tamil movie “Maaveeran” ( @Shri you can watch it on YouTube) and it had a scene of pre-independent India where the British folks had a pool party and it said “Dogs and Indians not allowed”. I thought it was overexaggeration then but then reading this and reading how Indians were referred to in Sherlock Holmes books (Sign of Four) among other things, I am really starting to think none of it was over the top at all.

timestamped to the relevant scene. It has everything that is coming out in these hearings. A brown man forced to drink, the dogs and Indians not allowed stuff. Of course, a heroic fight follows but come on, they were not exaggerating at all, I feel. ☹

Well it’s deeply embarrassing as an English cricket fan. Can’t say anymore than that really.
It's an issue that goes beyond cricket IMO. I would expect exactly the same sort of culture in rugby dressing rooms up and down the country, probably to a worse degree as rugby is probably a whiter sport than cricket in this country.

Yeah, quite so.

I wasn't naive enough to think everything in the garden was rosy, but the endemic nature and the (at best) tacit acceptance of casual, unthinking racism was slightly surprising and thoroughly depressing.

I dont think many people really had an issue with it initially. Pujara himself had mentioned it as far back as 2018 and seemed fine with it.

Once it came out last year that it wasnt just Pujara, but multiple non-white cricketers had been called that it rightly became looked at as significantly less acceptable. If it was just him you could claim it was an affectionate nickname between friends which is what pujara thought as well at the time. Its not the biggest deal on its own I guess but just another indicator of a disrespectful attitude towards brown cricketers.
Video of Jack Brooks videoing Pujara calling him Steve.

Bus just laughing in the background

Not sure why Gillespie saying the Asian lads need to sit together.

It feels wrong to say something like Gillespie should have known better but 1000% should he have known better.

Btw did Dobell get booted from cricinfo because he really wanted to pursue this more aggressively and the editorial leadership at the site wasn't as committed? Because that's been a suspicion I've had ever since that news came out, with this brewing in the background.
