When conway injured this was the perfect time o get in reserve like Jamieson in the team to replace sodhi tosday, i dont think Australia would have fancied facing jamieson thunderbolts today

Big part of why we were even in the final was due to Southee’s bowling through out the tournament. I’m curious, who would you have played ahead of him?
The guy's Southee obsession is pretty hilarious, it's been the exact same post for years.

a) Hopefully not many, hopefully in position to do better in the future. We've only lost two of 4, incidentally.
b) Judging on how it seems we absolutely do have a mental block, a few more
c) Quite a few - he was nigh-on our best bowler until today and is 'only' 32

My question is - why the hell do we have a T20 series now in India? I can't imagine anyone who is interested in playing more of those now.

Marsh was creaming pace-on into the stands.

Finch with a match winning coin toss. Should have gotten MotM. Brilliant call.

Steve Smith body useless. Should have stayed at home and been practising for the Ashes instead.

Hazlegood

And it's good to see Marsh vindicated publicly in the LO formats. Very underrated in the pyjamas.

yes he was good, let down when it mattered the most, he wasn't alone....sodhi had a terrible outing too

as a replacement...lockie, kuggelejin, tickner, duffy

Australian team is packed with stars who stand up....and then you have us with a proven choker like Guptill who smashed the bunniest of bunny nations in test cricket but couldn't cut it against the top sides and a moving ball, and he's been exactly the same in short format cricket over the last 6 years - beats up on bunny nations + got a show-off double hundred in a walk-over in 2015. Chokes when he needs to stand up against the very best sides. Very sad. Then we have 'Flatline' who is always supposed to be ice cool but is always revealed as well off the pace whenever the big ocassion comes around. Was the embarrassment of the last test tour to Australia and here his body language was again of a man under the pump and over-awed. Sodhi also comes apart mentally on the big stage. GP fancies himself as a 'Big Show' type player when he'd be better off getting bat on ball and playing some conventional shots between going for his trade-mark slogs.

Lockie would obviously be in any first choice NZXI. But Kuggeleijn is a discount Milne and should be nowhere close to selection. Tickner's brief forays into T20i's have been pretty horrific. And Duffy is basically Southee minus the control and plus a couple of inches of height.

The only frontline pace trio that could even considerably nudge Southee out would be Boult, Ferguson, Milne. But even then the circumstances in which that happened would be pretty rare. We saw throughout this tournament that Southee was much more effective as both a container and a wicket-taker than Milne. Could only see it on a really fast bouncy pitch, played in hot dry conditions.

I know you're a noted cynic, but I feel like a lot of NZ people would offer a (diluted) view similar to this on Gup. His T20 career has relied heavily on playing in NZ - remarkably, since the start of 2018 (before this tournament) he'd had one T20I innings out of 35 outside of NZ. I have no doubt that's kept his T20I career going. Same could be said of his ODI career. One series overseas since 2018, a poor World Cup (and one ODI in Australia before COVID). I'm not sure how his franchise form has been, but I don't think it's been anything great.

The innings this morning was really not at all good enough. And it's too familiar for NZ in big games

don't agree with thundaboult re southee, but there's a point to be made about our tendency to overrate performances in meaningless bilaterals on home grounds. I rate gup on his day but we've known forever that against good attacks away from home he can bat himself into a corner and eat up balls. Many (well, TH mostly) have been calling out sodhi for a while as a fluke merchant without many class attributes. Could probably use a minor correction back to some more gut-feel selections and non-selections.

Very happy for Warner. Guy is what he is but he's a team man to the core also and one of the names of the modern game. The anti-bogan abuse he's received over the years on this forum automatically makes me root for him too.
Sometimes he gets #tired though
