England v New Zealand (SUPER OVER? BOUNDARY COUNTBACK?) at Abu Dhabi, 11-10 Wednesday (N), Semi-final #1

Morgan bottled this today. Should have bowled an over or two of Moeen. But well done NZ. That decision to have Mitchell open has worked wonders. I am still baffled how, but it has. Hopefully they dont bottle it against Aus if Aus makes the finals.
Harsh on Morgan I think. I expected Moeen to bowl but Livingstone done really well in his 4 overs and the seam was doing fine at the other end until the final 4 overs. Jordan gets taken to the cleaners by Neesham and the match turns on its head. But given Jordan is the designated death bowler and bowled a good first couple overs he still would've bowled the 17th very likely had Moeen bowled an over or 2.

Hoping for a Pakistan win tomorrow would be a nice final where I am not too upset whoever wins.!

Wow - Mitchell proved me wrong again.

Neesham turned that game though.

Thrilled we are in the final. Not sure who I want to face despite our tendency to crumble vs oz -Pakistan have looked the best team so far.

Lots of people going on about Phillip's big hitting but neesham was always going to be the key if it got to a hit out pressure situation. Glenn Phillips looks like a poor attack/flat track bully tbh.

Congratulations to our ANZAC brothers, however........

Australia will win the final and prove, to the English in particular, that we are by far the best t20 nation on Earth.

Meh can't complain.

The Malan Ali partnership ended up ok statistically but they were a little fortunate it worked out like that given they were both dropped and ungainly thrashes. Their running between the wickets was shown up a lot by NZ. Both Malan and Ali are slow runners on a biggish outfield they really didn't get enough 1s and 2s to compensate for their moderate boundary output. Mo accelerated the backend a bit but really need more than the initial run a ball 20 given he was batting with Malan and the firepower left in the dressing room.

Bowling- well we always figured it was ugh however much the early tournament stuff looked otherwise. No death bowling always meant we were vulnerable when NZ were only 2 down after 10 overs even though they were behind the 8 ball in terms of runrate. Awful stuff by Jordan.

Stolen from Cricinfo.

Shows how bad England bowled when it was managed in 3 overs!!!

"New Zealand chased down 57 runs in the last four overs, the most target runs successfully chased by any team in men's T20Is at the death overs (where we have BBB data). Previous most was 56 by Australia vs Pakistan 2010 and Zimbabwe vs Scotland 2021."

Only took winning the toss and Mills being replaced by the flag-bearer of English mediocrity Woakes but NZ sneak through. Congratulations.

I'll choose to view this as England losing and delight in that instead.
TBF quite a few of us thought that powerplay spell from Woakes had won England the game.

Have gone into a state of dreamland again, was very cynical about our chances, taking semi finals for granted! Gotten so used to them! Starting to expect nothing less than a final these days...wow what a time to be a NZ fan

Big job on to rebuild as old team. Then again most teams are
Next World T20 is only a year after this one. Expect mostly the same core group for that tournament at least.

If anyone calls it quits before then I guess it'd be the skipper, which I suppose would be a big change.

What I feel like England have done well over the last 5 or 6 years in both white ball formats is they've not just hit lots of boundaries but run brilliantly. Guys like Butter, Bairstow, and to a lesser extent Roy and Root. With Malan, Ali and Morgan in this team you've got 3 slow runners these days. Really don't want 2 of the slow runners in at the same time like today especially as all 3 are left handed.

Thinking ahead to next year. Bowling certainly benefit from Archer's return if that happens. Still other than him lacking quality options. We seem to keep Jordan around because he's a specialist in 20 over and death bowling combined with good fielding/lower order batting but that might have to be the end of his career.

Stokes for Ali would offer more in Australia you'd think given Ali's intolerance to the ball above the hip, and Livingstone's emergence as a allrounder. Morgan too is vulnerable given he doesn't like the short stuff and his boundary hitting is on the wane although the harder wickets of Australia may be more suited to him.

For world t20 2022 in Aus? Buttler, Roy, Stokes/Malan, Bairstow, Morgan, Livingstone, S Curran, Wood, Rashid, Archer, ?Anderson/another lol.

Yeah. I think a few players, especially Rashid and Jordan, have been under par for a while now and need to be told 'thank you for all you've done but we're moving on to look at other players now'

In Australia I'd look at Buttler, Vince, Malan and Livingstone being the top 4. Roy will probably still be in contention but I'd move on from Bairstow. Stokes and Billings 5/6. Billings looks a bit of a meh pick probably but think he has ability. S Curran and Woakes followed by Archer, Dawson (underrated imo) and one of Mills/Topley

EDIT : Livingstone is an absolute weapon. That guy along with Buttler could single-handedly destroy attacks with ease next year. Bat him in the top 4!
