yeah Nick Larkin and Daniel Solway is exactly what that team needs...

you could at least say well Hunt and Ward have scored some runs, NSW shouldn't have let those guys slip. but of course the problem there is that the games wasted on Larkin in particular would need to be acknowledged
Ward in particular not really being in the mix in NSW seems mystifying to me. O/c it probably didn't help he was behind Hughes + Larkin, but unlike Edwards and Sangha he at least dominated grade cricket.

Most team replace players with better players (not NSW). Larkin and Solway are capable of scoring first class hundreds. Gilkes, Edwards and Sangha look a world away from being anywhere near capable of scoring first class hundreds.

As I said in the off-season, I think Solway got thrown out with the bath-water, and he should have stayed contracted to apply pressure on Daniel Hughes who hasn't been putting up good enough performances for a long time now. He also could have replaced Larkin as an opener yonks ago. But in any case, this whole foetus thing is missing the point imo. the entire NSW batting line-up isn't good enough. It's been saved over the last two seasons by Moz being awesome, and more appearances from Smith, but frankly Hughes and Patterson's performances are a 1000 times more concerning. Sangha and Edwards aren't letting down an otherwise smooth batting order....

NSW management being shown up for the idiots they are by releasing Nick Larkin and Daniel Solway and replacing them with players who didn't even 1% of the ability those two do. Masterstroke (not)!
Agree with this but not Solway and Larkin more so the guys like Ward and Hunt who have moved states and done very well. Awkward time to be a NSW selector when the batsmen that left because they weren't getting picked are way better than the batsmen that you kept them out for.

Solway's still averaging ~40 in FC cricket. He did not have a good year but it was a pretty ridiculous decision; he's not even particularly old.

I probably can't defend Larkin anymore (at least not from a NSW perspective - might have been worth a punt for struggling state to give him a change of scenery or something) but the disproportionate faith shown in Sangha and Edwards over Solway or one of the good grade bats is well worth criticising.

The real elephant in the room is probably Lachlan Hearne. He's actually younger than Sangha and Edwards, but unlike either of them does not have a rotten history of Shield failure behind him, and unlike Edwards in particular has also done really well in first grade - his averages the last four seasons (dating back to when he was 16) are 56, 38, 53 and 49.

Yeah NSW really should be giving the whole season to Hearne. Even Gilkes seems better than Sangha/Edwards (at least doesn't have the same stench of failure).

Gilkes is in danger of being a regular Kurtis Patterson. Got to 20 every innings bar one since he was picked to open, no tons.

Gilkes looked pretty awful yesterday
Forgot he played in the most recent match lol

Strangely for all the bagging I gave him Sangha's averaged over 70 at Grade cricket over the last couple of seasons. He probably does need to be dropped but he has seemed to earn his go more than I suspected.

Reading through the last two pages just reminded me of Jack Edwards's batting in that last BBL.

Sangha at least looks like he's nowhere near his potential output or roof, so there's reason to be hopeful. But man Bertus didn't get much of a rope did he in comparison.

Why wouldn’t you pick him ahead of Spudgha or Spudwards?
To bat at 5 or 6? He might crawl to a 120 ball 30 before we're all out. We already have Nev for that. He's opening or not in the team for me (which tbf, should have been the case last season).

Patto was at 3 and Sangha was at 4 this game. Solway at 3 would've made lots of sense.

Alternatively, I reckon Gilkes would do fine at 5 anyway.

certainly I'm not quite sure where Gilkes opening has come from, so sure move him down and you can have Solway open, but Gilkes ain't doing any worse than his almost 33yo opening partner. Like I said, I think the Edwards/Sangha thing is completely overplayed. You'd think it was NSW's only problem the way it's talked about here in here. You'd think Lyon, Copeland and Hughes didn't do nothing in the last game in vastly more important positions. Or that it's been systematic for NSW when in reality NSW has barely played youth over the past 10 seasons (remember when we picked Mason Crane? picked Somers Somerville when he was like 30 already?). Even Conway was originally recruited out of the U19s but didn't actually start getting games until his mid 20s. Edwards/Sangha got a season of games in what was an oddity for NSW, and then they basically disappeared for 18 months and only returned after we were bowled out for 32, and that's kinda embarrassing when the batting order consisted of a bunch of people with no chance of ever playing international cricket and aren't really helping the shield team win.

You could drop the entire batting order from last game and I wouldn't complain. But focusing on Sangha/Edwards and letting the other people who haven't been performing for yonks off the hook doesn't do much for me.

Did you not see the game that just finished yesterday? A 120 ball 30 would have been hugely beneficial.

In any event we all know this entire discussion is camouflage for the fact all decent NSW supporters want Bertus back in the NSW line up asap.
