Doesn't this already count as overthrows? So that you can't keep a tailender on strike if you don't care about the runs?
I don't think so? I think it only counts as overthrows if it's thrown in the general direction of the stumps. I'm not sure about the rule but it's how it's been officiated. It does seem really dumb.
Sehwag once picked up the ball and threw it over the rope to get amla off strike when SA were batting to save the game.

Fielders would just pick it up and throw it to the rope to save runs.
Doesn't work that way

19.8 Overthrow or wilful act of fielder

If the boundary results from an overthrow or from the wilful act of a fielder, the runs scored shall be

any runs for penalties awarded to either side

and the allowance for the boundary

and the runs completed by the batters, together with the run in progress if they had

already crossed at the instant of the throw or act.

Law 18.12.2 (Batter returning to wicket he/she has left) shall apply as from the instant of the throw or act.

Pretty sure 6's were only given as 4's around beginning of last century? Wasn't it Clem Hill who hit the biggest six of all time but still had to keep running... or something like that.

Correct, but if you do it cleverly enough you could say it was an "accident". Obviously you wouldn't literally pick the ball up and throw it, just casually kick it over like "whoops"

Anyway I was more talking about balls that would hit the fence by themselves if you didn't chase and stop them. There'd be no point bothering trying to stop them unless you're keeping it to 2

I'm sure the rule exists. I'm saying umpires don't enforce this.
