Under 19 talent scout thread

Speaking for India, I'd like to see the quick Rahul Kumar in the India squad. He's a few days away from his 18th b'day, tall and bowls 140 plus. OTOH, U19 squad selection in India is very much a regional quota puzzle so merit and performance are only 2nd order considerations.

2 of India U19 teams are going to play Lanka and Bangladesh in a quadrangular later this month so that'll give a clue on the eventual squad for world cup'22.

Going to be tough for Australia as New South Wales and Victoria are in lockdown with no grade cricket being played for some time

Another match today between Windies and England, who won by one wicket.

Pitch span lots. Not sure if that is usual for Beckenham, bit it wasn't the best wicket. Still was s good match. Teddy Bishop batted on a different wicket to everyone else for 97 not out, was great to see. Unfortunately every other West Indian batsman sucked as England's spinners once again ran through the lineup.

Isaiah Thorne then bowled a yard quicker than anyone else in the match, which is impressive as he is only 16. Unfortunately he was as wild as he was fast and we conceded 30 extras.....

Windies won the 3rd match by 2 wickets. Teddy Bishop backed up his 97 not out last game with 133 today. The next highest score in the match was 44.

He's a tall batsman with elegant strokes all around the wicket. He scored at well over a run per ball without taking risks. Very impressed.

So Victoria and NSW are still in lockdown with no cricket being played for the foreseeable future

IF the Australian government allows the team out (no guarantee as it’s just a bunch of kids playing cricket), selections will need to be drawn out of a hat as there will be very few recent performances to judge those from our biggest states

To put things into perspective, there’s been no under age National championships for 2 years and grade cricket seasons have been decimated

It was my first look at England. Obviously Jacob Bethell is a Bajan so I know about him already, but he was the best batsman on display. He looks class.
England U19 trial games: Jacob Bethell 185(110), successful chase of 405 with a ball to spare. Will Luxton with 134(103) for the other team to set the big target.

I've now gone back to the West Indies U19 tour's scorecards, trying to find out why Luxton did nothing in that (highest score of 27 in four knocks). He copped superb wicket-taking deliveries a couple of times, tried to employ his pull shot early without his eye being in and duffed them a couple of other times.

I watched a couple of those in person. He struggled against the pace of Isaiah Thorne, who in fairness was rapid in his opening spell and beat him for pace 2 balls in a row before finally knicking him off. He still played the odd pleasing shot and you could see he's got a lot going for him.

It can be hard to judge in these bi-lateral Under 19 series. For example, in our trial games, Ackeem Auguste, Rivaldo Clarke and Geovonte Depeiza looked in a different league from the other batsmen. But they came here and really struggled, found lots of ways of getting out whilst Teddy Bishop, who got lots of pretty little 20's and 30's in our trial matches, looked a class apart in this series.

I wonder if Michael Atherton picked up on that obscure trial game Jacob Bethell 185 via this thread. He mentioned it in the Sky coverage, seeing Warwickshire talent was in focus (Rob Yates and co.).

He would have a particular interest in West Indies/England U19 cricketers on the rise, via his partner and son.

I’m sure he will as he knows Jacob Bethell from Barbados and spoke of him on Sky when he woke Bunburry player of the tournament

New Zealand U19 news: Not planning to attend the World Cup early next year. Demand too strong for the managed isolation hotels etc. that would be required for the team's return.

I wonder if the Taliban will accept them as political refugees.

Windies have named their Under 19 World Cup squad

A few names I didn't mention earlier in the thread have impressed in the latest trial matches to force their way in. Shaqkere Parris, a right handed opener from Barbados, played some good innings and nipped in ahead of the incumbant Anderson Amurdan. In fairness, all the openers have scored runs so it must have been a difficult decision.

Jordan Johnson, a left hand middle order bat from Jamaica, played a couple of devastating knocks to nip in ahead of some others.

Shiva Sankar, a skiddy right hand pacer from T & T, got in ahead of a few others that played in England.

The fact there was such good competition for places is excellent and overall I'd say we have a very promising squad. In England the top order batting and bowling was excellent, but the middle order was awful. In the Caribbean practice matches, the middle order was excellent though. So we shall see.

My ones to watch are Isaiah Thorne (pace like fire), Ackeem Auguste (elegant left hander) and Rivaldo Clarke (elegant right hander).

Seen a provisional training squad for Australia, from a South Australian point of view the name that stands out to me is Isaac Higgins. Right handed top order bat, fairly wristy of technique, generally scores his runs freely. Bowls some potentially useful fingerspin as well. His dad Ben played for South Australia in the early 2000s

What I like is how he is already making plenty of grade runs, as opposed to being entirely a youth pathways based selection

A little disappointed Mackenzie Best (tall left arm paceman) doesn't seem to be in their plans

Is that a thing in Australia? They can go entirely through youth systems and aren't exposed enough to mens cricket? Sounds a bit like the Under 23 system in English football. League one teams sometimes get Premier League Under 23 players on the basis of their form in that system and find their next to useless in the cut and thrust of league football.

Yes but not completely, I probably wasn't clear there. But there has certainly been cases of players getting into their state sides of the back off underage white ball performances despite minimal experience/results for their club

It really is pretty dire imo
