Dhoni was inferior to Gilly in Test. Was garbage T20 I bat. I don't give much importance to T20 leagues.

This is why I also consider Kohli > Devilliers &Gayle in T20 batting because of huge difference in their batting average in T20 I .
Dhoni isn’t a garbage t20i bat. Look at his average, he batted the middle overs a lot too - teams usually bat slower in the middle overs . There’s a reason Pollard as an example is scared to death of batting middle overs even in t20 unless by force

I completely disagree that Dhoni was a better keeper against spin too. Gilchrist kept to Warne beautifully. Dhoni had quick hands and amazing instincts when it came to stumpings/runouts but this like everything else about him was awesome when it came to limited overs cricket. In tests the general impression I always got was that he was less secure than guys like Gilchrist. He was relatively sloppy at times against Bhajji and Ojha in late 2000s/early 2010s.

Captaincy makes it closer though. Overall the gap between them as test cricketers is pretty huge so I'd still say Gilchrist.

I honestly don't care. Gilly was garbage as a T20 bat too. I do give importance to leagues given they were far more professional in the early years than T20Is were. Its a different story post 2012. But till then it was always treated as the joke format internationally except for WT20.

I have vivid memories of watching him in England in 2011. It's not an overstatement - and it's not as if he was that much better in Australia in far more straightforward conditions six months later.
Nah, he was bad in 2011, yes but he was also good in 2007 and 2014. Like I said, ultimately he drops about the same percentage as Gilly and failing to collect swinging balls does not change that.

And more to the point of the OP, my feeling is the captaincy beats every other factor here, given the rest are reasonably close to each other.

Yeah Gilchrist wasn't a flashy keeper who regularly pulled off the remarkable (at least against spin), but he was super reliable and solid. Pretty much every catch you would expect him to make, he would make, and every stumping you would expect him to make, he generally made. He became sort of invisible as a keeper which is a pretty good asset.

Dhoni was good in 2007 ? Did you even watch the series. Your CSK fandom is clouding your judgement

 Yes he was. And I even posted here that DK was a better keeper at that time for those conditions. But again, he did not drop chances. Ultimately, that is more important.

And honestly, you should not talk of anyone's bias given your entire raison d'etre is to hate on Virat.

Dhoni doesn't have a century outside Asia. While lack of centuries can be excused in ODI/T20 because of his batting position, same can't be said in Test.

T20 works a bit differently to other formats though. IPL more important than international T20s, and Dhoni is arguably the most influential player in its history.

27 @140 in the earliest seasons of the ipl was garbage??? Must also be noted that in his first 2 season's he averaged 33 @145 with a ton and 6 50's and nearly 1000 runs. His last 4 seasons where suspect, but he was like 39 at that point. God knows how much he would have done if he played in at his peak instead of at the shadow end of his career at age 36+.

All 3 formats clearly Gilchrist. White ball is too close to call (perhaps MSD).
ODIs Dhoni is far ahead. He is a proper ATG limted over bat. Tests, Gilchrist is ahead. Keeping wise Dhoni may be tad infront. Captaincy, don't think there is even a debate. If you want a keeper - bat - captain, it is hard to look beyond Dhoni.
