OK, so man generally lends itself to males. But man started as a 'gender neutral' term well before woke culture, did it not? So batsman wasn't aimed at a specific gender at all. Mankind means all people.

My favourite was the suggestion by a feminist NZ journo that nightwatchman be changed to 'caretaker' :laugh:
