Where do you stand on Steve Waugh vs Shane Warne debate (as people)

The problem for Warne is he has no where to go in terms of Waugh's record as captain. People might claim Waugh had a great squad, but the win-loss, and win percentage, was extremely good with massive longevity. Australia were a very good squad with alternatives and the aim was to pick the best team to win - it wasn't personal and Warne needs to respect that.

Warne has some good thoughts and cricket views sometimes. He clearly loves cricket and loved playing, so it's understandable he was fuming about being dropped. But he needs to think about why he was actually dropped and not take it personally.

he tried to set a curfew at the at the start of his captaincy and put a wives and girlfriends ban on his players before Tom Moody politely told him it was a stupid idea during the '99 WC

The reason this was ban would have been imposed was because TOTAB rightly brought one in 1989 after the fiasco in 1985 where WAGs were allowed to stay in the hotel, and there were instances of players being up in the middle of the night trying to get their newborn kids to sleep when they were not out over night in a test match. And it worked too.

Warne even admits here he had just had a shoulder operation and wasn't fully fit. Steve Waugh was completely right. In fact, if you cant deliver because you are unfit and still insist to play, you may be a bit selfish yourself.

I believe he plays(ed) in a bunch of a tournaments but on this occasion I happened to be on his table at a cash game at the casino. Honestly, it was a great experience

He was absolutely slaughtered - Smashing back drink after drink, slugging back ciggies and had an entourage of ladies vying for his attention. He was shoving all in blind preflop and was managing to talk half the table to come along for the ride.

My favourite part was that we were all playing until about 2:30am - Warnie staggering off with some lady that had specifically moved onto our table - But he had commentary the next day and looked bright as anything

Well, Warne was bowling the worst in his entire career. And then Colin Miller who replaced him the next test performed very well and Australia retained the trophy. So Warne whining about it is pathetic frankly.

If anything, that increases my respect for Waugh. It takes guts to drop a big name bowler in your first series as captain. And it was the right call. I recall Imran Khan dropping his cousin Majid who never spoke to him again.

Warne did bowl the spell of his career a mere month or two later in the WC

Warne told Waugh he felt right to play and felt a big game just around the corner. He probably thought he had earned the right to have some say on the matter through years of being an ATG. Keep in mind he was also vice captain at this point, I think that should also get you a bit of credit in the bank to avoid the axe. It certainly does if you're the captain outright. Tubby Taylor went 2 years averaging like 20 keeping his spot only a couple of years earlier

Basically in Warne's mind there were several factors why he felt he deserved one more chance to prove himself and I think some of those factors hold merit.

Nah it was definitely right to drop him. No one should get to play based on who they are or what they've done before if they aren't currently up to it.

However you should also consider other examples like Ashwin not given a test in the current series because it affects team balance despite him being in a very good form.

A captain has right to drop a player if he feels he has better alternatives available.

That's a complete false equivalency and you know it. Your best batsman getting out a few times isn't the same as a bowler with a ****ed shoulder that bowled poorly for dozens of overs on end.

I've got plenty of time for letting blokes back in and moving on. Yasir drug cheated and copped it clean. That one incident is enough to show who Warne is at his core.
