This current era probably lacks the mid tier of players who average low 40s, but otherwise the distribution of averages is pretty normal, I think. Mid-to-high 30s is just how a lot of Test batsmen used to be, now forgotten.
Yeah it does feel that while the amount of gun bats is comparable to most of history, there aren't as many "good" bats as once was. Other than New Zealand I don't think there's a batting lineup where there isn't massive holes in it.

What the hell is the worlds most irritating commentator doing in England randomly commentating an England vs India test match? We were mercifully free of his drivel at the start of the series IIRC?

Whatever it takes!!!
That was a "for the bowler" review there from Virat. I dont mind the first review used this way. But be sure after this.

Looked close live. Height wasn't a factor either. I'm ok with taking the review.

This has been such good bowling today morning. It's been somewhat missing this series, with Shami, Siraj, Ishant taking turns at being profligate. Bowl dry, bowl tight lines and wickets will come.

Two Tests in a row now we have had batsmen (Burns at Headingley, Malan here) immediately dismissed on their birthdays after looking solid the night before Maybe need to factor birthdays into selection somehow.

Umesh trying too hard for a magic ball here. Both balls were loose. One is understandable, second should not have happened.

chanderpaul actually was a gun bat with shots all around the ground and was more like WI's dravid to WI's sachin (lara)

chanderpaul is a level above poo as a batsman
Nope, Dravid was the perfect number 3, Chanderpaul batted down the order and didn't do that well at 3 or 4. Not saying one is better than the other, just that both were different.

Chanderpaul's role was that of a grafter at number 5, he didn't do that well at 3 or 4, but flourished at number 5. I feel that against a slightly older ball, Pujara too can find the same kind of success. His technical deficiencies against the moving ball is less likely to get exposed lower down the order.

Still better than short and wide. All it takes is a little movement away and slips are in action again.

Losing his line a little though. Might be time for a change.
