3-5 now have basically identical records clustered around an average of 25 since 2020:

If their record was condensed to one batsman, it would be 1853 runs in 42 tests @ an average of 25.4 with 1 hundred.
For me, this is evidence that there is a preparation problem rather than coincidental bad form. None of these players are playing any FC cricket and hardly any tour games. All they know is being constantly probed by world class bowling and it has made them too negative and watchful - just look at those strike rates! They need some more chances to score hundreds so they relearn how to build innings.

if the game is even when the 3rd innings starts, i'd be sending thakur at 3 and pant at 4. need positivity up top and its not coming from these *****

No one should be voluntarily buying a New Balance bat, on a sidenote. There's probably nothing that captures the imagination less than cricket bats made by an outfit that manufactures general sports kits and trainers.

Bats should be made by proper batmakers. The only exception to the above was the Slazenger bats, because of the pleasing aesthetics of the V logo (but primarily nostalgia).

22 tests is too long to carry a batsman averaging in the 20s at No.3 with no hundreds. That is a big chunk of Pujara's career. He typically almost always gets a single digit score when he comes in early after a wicket and hastens the collapse.

I was thinking the same thing about Pujara. But I don't see him out of this squad tbh, he is much better than most of the guys in the bench. I see him more in a Chanderpaul-like role. No. 3 isn't a good fit for him, if he bats at 5 when the ball gets slightly more older, he can be an asset for the team. Kohli, Vihari or Rahane can bat at 3 for that to happen.

Someone like Pujara can really wear down the opposition bowlers and anchor the innings, people look at him as a replacement of Dravid and that's why he is slotted at number 3, it's not working out for him.

I honestly don't think it was that mad. I think it would be mad not to give him another go at 5 in the second innings. No one guarantees runs in one given innings, even Joe Root (as shown today).
It's not mad because of the context quoted though.
Otherwise it's a pretty batshit idea - in 2018/2019 when at least Kohli and one of Rahane/Pujara were piling on the runs, you wouldn't suddenly go "Oh yea let's bat Jaddu at 5" even if he was averaging 50+ at the time.
But I don't think some of the non-Indian fans realise just how **** our batting currently is (they're starting to in their series though, but then they get confused when we play Jadeja at 5...).

Bright idea: the solution isn't to bat Jadeja at five. The solution is to get a proper batsman to bat at five. If you don't trust Rahane to bat ahead of Jadeja - it's Rahane that shouldn't be in the team.

I agree with you but sometimes one doesn't need to be so black-and-white about things. I think there was reason to see if Jadeja being a left-hander could break up England's rhythm of bowling the same line and also the slightly different technique might have worked well against the swinging ball. I think he should get a go in the second innings.

We would not be in this situation if Agarwal, Shaw and Vihari didn't have massive reservations against their contention but they all do - Agarwal and Shaw after Australia and Vihari after his poor county stint. SKY also is a very strange selection.

I know these are all problems of team management and selection but I think Jadeja at five and keeping Rahane is not as crazy as you think - even though I'd have liked to see Agarwal or Vihari in place of Rahane or Pujara (or even both).

India should plot a plan to get Concussion substitute for Pujara in 2nd inns. Get SKY in somehow.
India need to make a plan to get Pujara some runs and confidence also. Get him some time away from the Test team and into his Ranji team, for example.

Pant looks completely shot out there. He seems totally lost in these conditions.

Mad day, evenly poised.
If Malan was out instead of Root then England massively ahead but yes, I would agree evenly poised. England's game to lose considering unlikely to be much clouds tomorrow and it is a flat pitch which will likely get flatter and they bat very deep.

Thakur is fast becoming a talismanic player for us. Very reminiscent of Kapil in the way he swings through the ball on tiptoes. It looks reckless, it probably is reckless, but good God what an impact innings.

Bad takes justifying Jadeja's promotion on the first day of the Test match. This was not Pant in Sydney on the fifth day where you had to break a deadlock. You selected the team in full awareness literally a few hours before, you shouldn't have to be making fancy "tactical" moves so early in the piece. It's Test cricket; specialists exist for a reason. If you don't have faith in them to do the job, don't pick them.

International Coach
It's cruel to pick on Pant with Rahane, Kohli and Pujara stinking it out for so long, but if he has a similar knock in the second innings then I'd consider dropping him for the fifth test. It's harsh but he has looked very bad this tour and that innings today was dire.

I dunno,,,could Rahul keep and open in the same test? Maybe consider Vihari or Yadav to replace him ? Get the other opener to partner Rohit and have Rahul at 6? Not great alternatives either sadly.
