leach is a lot better than moeen with the ball and woakes is not a #7. im going to ride the 'wood is thoroughly mediocre' train to the end station too.

not sure england are in the position to rest anderson either. come on you really don't want to risk losing home series to india, that **** is embarassing. real countries just don't do that.

If you check their stats it makes no sense to bat Curran 7 Woakes 8 in that team. They would be the other way around. To say Woakes is not a 7 and then to bat Curran there is interesting

Resting Anderson would be a huge call. I don't think they'll do it unless he's basically injured.
If it were a dead rubber or a small series game they'd consider it but midway through a home India series which is 1-1 is no time. Can't see it really.

They have been handling him pretty carefully this series anyway. Quite a few absent sessions in the field.

Yeah I generally think most sides don't rotate their quicks enough but this one wouldn't make sense. It's not like early in the summer where you risk losing him for 6 or 7 tests if he breaks down. Even if he picks up a muscle injury he's not going to miss much cricket.

Probably giving him steroids and that radiation that they gave to Spiderman to allow him to swing.

That was a radioactive spider bite iirc.

So now I'm imagining the England medical staff involuntarily administering the bug to 'Mr. Anderson'.

I'm fine with Moeen playing and batting #7, but on the evidence of the past few years, considering him an "all-rounder" is pretty nominal imo and whilst he certainly could put in an impactful performance with the bat (and I really hope he does), I think it's more a case of hope than expectation.

Similar thing with Curran's batting - he could score a useful 40-odd next test and I wouldn't exactly be shocked, but it's becoming the exception rather than the rule. And even if he does make a useful contribution, it's got to make up for his generally inadequate bowling. Drop him for Woakes imo and if Woakes does badly don't immediately start looking at Curran through rose-tinted glasses. Frankly he's been a bit of a passenger for a little while now. Equally, such a change making our attack look samey should absolutely not be blamed if things go badly, given that the alternative is to select a considerably worse player.

This got me thinking about the last time SCurran made a decent score.

After a quick squizz at cricinfo it seems he hasn't made a 50 since our last tour of Sri Lanka in 2018, which was his 3rd in his 7th test.

He's made a couple of useful contributions since then, most notably in the 2nd innings against Ireland so we'd have something to bowl at, but since the start of 2019 he's averaging 18.68 with the bat and 39.90 with the ball over 17 tests.

Not writing the boy off giving he's still roughly 12, but I think it's reasonable to say he hasn't progressed since his initial impact.

I’m not hugely inclined to defend him, but I think those numbers aren’t damning. Early career Broad and Flintoff would have similar.

Proves he's not a number 7 (or even 8 really) bat though. Can't fill the batting allrounder role with bowling allrounder (barely) statistics.

He’s played 5 tests in 2020. 5 so far in 2021. In those 10 tests he’s taken 15 wickets @ 47.53 and averaged 17.08 with the bat.

I’m sure he tries his best, but they all do. It’s the national team. If nothing else they need to be fair to the alternatives. The have lost the plot somewhat to keep picking him.

Currans 23 and was clearly not the finished article when picked. England management have no right to go all shocked face and fire him before Stokes returns.

They invested, they need to continue developing him.

Think Moeen will become the joint second most picked spinner for England, not bad for someone mucked around with by the evil selectors.

I would rest Anderson myself, and of course Curran, Oval not Jimmehs best ground, and the attack looks samey if you go Woakes, Robinson, Overton, Jimmeh, look Wood is over-rated but he is fast.

Would be my 11, don't think you need moeen if woakes is fit, as much as I like him as a player.
Ideally this would be my side too, maybe Mahmood ahead of Wood, with Pope at 5. He averages over a 100 at the Oval, so there's that.
