Now think of a side with Donald, DeVilliers, Schultz with Saqlain / Kumble.

If I am not mistaken, Kumble's first series in SAF he bowled exceptionally. So he has the ability to be a threat on faster wickets as well.

I don't know that they would have though. Kumble's record against that dominant Aus side outside India was ok but nothing special until later in his career when the likes of Waugh had retired.

Compared to that, Symcox, Eksteen, Henry etc were not even remotely close being to OK. None of them have even made to a first class side in sub continent.

And Saqlain averages 34 in Australia, against a side with Waughs and Pontings. Warne averaged more than that in Shield against FC batsmen. Sqlain's injuries were horribly managed by Pakistan. He would have had a stellar career if he had played for any other country probably with exception of AUS / SL.

Oh yeah, he was a quality bowler for sure. Limited by being a finger spinner and therefore inferior, of course, but for that breed he was very good indeed.

As much as you don't rate SL, they were a very good side in 2000-10 ( Murali's peak ) at home. So performance in SL can't be ignored. It is credit to Warne /Martyn that Aus defeated SL 3-0 in 2004.
Yeah they were certainly a tough ask at home, it's just every time I see they're touring, I just can't bring myself to look forward to it because they're just really bad.

I've said this a stack of times before and feel a bit bad for picking on the chronically ordinary, but who here can put their hand on their heart and say they've ever looked ahead to an upcoming season and gone "Oh fantastic! Sri Lanka is touring! Can't wait"? Be honest, no one ever has.

It's because they never seem to make any effort to play in proper cricket conditions. It's all fun and games when South Africa or Australia tour and they can dish out dustbowls that make a joke out of cricket and win a few games, bit in the long run it hurts them. Bangladesh are doing the same thing now.

agreed. Conditions native to the subcontinent can never be proper cricket conditions. Only those native to England and australia (and sometimes South Africa and NZ)

Yes but Symcox would have made it into most sub continental sides as a batsmen.

Pretty sure our cricketers loved a nice stats padding Sri Lanka tour.

Sri Lanka are chronically rekt by having two decent pacemen in my entire lifetime. Vaas and Malinga, that's it. Lakmal is respectable now but he's a far cry from Vaas and Malinga.

Pace bowling nations have an inherent advantage over spin bowling nations because pace can work everywhere much easier than finger spin can. South Africa, England and NZ can get away with one or two competent spinners in 30 years a lot easier than the subcontinent sides can with a lack of competent pace.

Sri Lanka do produce some raw pace and swing bowling talent but they're the worst at converting it. At least Bangladesh have the excuse of not having any fast bowling talent to waste in the first place. Mortaza and Taskin could have been things I guess.

A country capable of producing the batsmen and spinners Sri Lanka do shouldn't be such pushovers overseas, but its entirely because since Vaas retired they rock up with a pace attack who wouldn't look out of place in the Hawke Cup and fail the Tom Latham Test. There's always the Pedestrian One, The Fast but Inaccurate One and the Dangerously Unfit One. Bonus points if someone throws it.
