Under 19 talent scout thread

With the Under 19 World Cup coming to the Caribbean in early 2022, I thought I'd start a thread to identify the next generation of cricketers we'll all be arguing over in future. I think similar threads have existed previously, but I couldn't find them!

Basically if you have a decent clip or story on a promising cricketer who is currently Under 19 or will be at the next World Cup, post it here.

So West Indies just had a 56 man camp to help select a squad for an upcoming tour of England and then the World Cup. That has now been narrowed down to 26 players who are once again in camp.

Some of the initial trial matches were streamed on the CWI YouTube channel so I was able to see many of the players. My ones to watch based on that are:

Batsmen

Rivaldo Clarke

18 year old right handed middle order batsman and keeper from Barbados. Reminds me of a young Joe Root. Was the top run scorer in the trial matches with 2 centuries and a 50.

Giovonte Depeiza
18 year old middle order batsman from Barbados. Ridiculously powerful for his age. Scored runs quickly and dominantly. ALso bowls useful left arm spin.

Ackeem Auguste
17 year old left hand middle order batsman from St Lucia. Extremely elegant batsman. Scored a century in the latest non-televised match. Only saw cameos on the live stream but some of his shots were .

Spinners

Amrit Dass

18 year old left arm chinaman bowler and useful batsman from T & T. Was one of many wrist spinners on display as CWI are actively prioritising wrist spin. Also looked solid with the bat.

Onaje Amory
17 year old off spinner from St Kitts & Nevis. Very tall and gives the ball a good rip.

Seamers

Kelvin Pittman

18 year old right hand fast bowler from Antigua. Looks very quick indeed for his age.

Isai Thorne
16 year old right hand quick from Guyana. Timed at 84mph when just 14. Looks very quick but didn;t take many wickets.

Mckenney Clarke
18 year old right handed pacer from St Lucia. Looks tall, strong and quick. Has a very repeatable action.

Nathan Edwards
16 year old left arm swing bowler and useful batsman from St Maarten. Not quick but swung the ball loads and was the leading wicket take ar just 16 years of age.

In general, we have loads of exceptional young pacers, some interesting wrist spinners and the batsman looked pretty good. This is the first generation of West Indies cricketers that have benefited from the structure Jimmy Adams has been putting in place so I really hope we can produce some truly test class players, particularly batsmen. There were some players who scored lots of runs but not in televised games. The second leading run scorer Anderson Amurdan from Antigua was one.

That Kelvin Pittman is quick alright
Apparently he was quickish until earlier this year when he suddenly put on a good few yards of pace. He was slightly wild at times though, so lets hope he learns to be more accurate over time.

Not sure about his action, in that his front arm isn't up to much and leaves his bowling arm a lot to do.

But I'm no bowling coach.

I think you're right. It's why if I had to put a bet on who is likely to be the long standing international bowler I would probably choose Mckenney Clarke. He has a good action.

Just had a look at him. Yep, better action and he's not short of pace himself. Seems to have some skill as well using that seam.

So I clearly don't have a future as a cricket talent scout. Kelvin Pitman and Amrit Dass didn't make the final 18 to tour England next week. Final squad is:
  • CAPTAIN: Ackeem Auguste Age: 17 (Left-hand bat/right-arm leg-spin)
  • VICE CAPTAIN: Giovonte Depeiza Age: 18 (Right-hand bat/left-arm spin)
  • Onaje Amory Age: 17 (Right-hand bat/right-arm off-spin)
  • Anderson Amurdan Age: 18 (Right-hand opening bat)
  • Justin Beckford Age: 17 (Right-hand bat/right-arm off-spin)
  • Teddy Bishop Age: 18 (Right-hand opening bat)
  • Carlon Bowen-Tuckett Age: 17 (Right-hand bat/wicket-keeper)
  • McKenny Clarke Age: 18 (Right-hand bat/right-arm fast)
  • Rivaldo Clarke Age: 18 (Right-hand bat/wicket-keeper)
  • Nathan Edward Age: 16 (Left-hand bat/left-arm fast-medium)
  • Andel Gordon Age: 18 (Right-hand bat/left-arm medium-pace)
  • Sion Hackett Age: 18 (Right-hand bat/right-arm medium-fast)
  • Justin Jagessar Age: 16 (Right-hand bat)
  • Johann Layne Age: 17 (Right-hand bat/right-arm fast-medium)
  • Anderson Mahase Age: 18 (Left-hand bat/left-arm spin)
  • Matthew Nandu Age:18 (Left-hand bat/right-arm off-spin)
  • Isai Thorne Age: 16 (Right-hand bat/right-arm fast)

Mahmudul Hassan Joy is a wonderful batsman to watch! How's he progressing?
I think lack of first class season during pandemic maybe holding their progression a bit. I mean FC here is not competitive in that sense but still we could get a feeling of their measures somewhat. However in last DPL T20 comp in june this year, he was leading run scorer in first half a dozen matches.

Turns out Pittman got injured and that's why he missed out. Definitely one to watch though.

Saw the 1st under 19 ODI between England and West Indies today. England won by a landslide on a slow pitch at Beckenham.

Of the names I've mentioned, McKenney Clarke and Isiah Thorne impressed. Clarke beat a number of batsmen for pace and Thorne was the quickest bowler in the match despite being only 16 years old.

It was my first look at England. Obviously Jacob Bethell is a Bajan so I know about him already, but he was the best batsman on display. He looks class. James Rew was good as well, capitalising on some ordinary spin bowling.

None of the seamers really impressed and weren't quite as quick as our main two, but Sonny Baker had some pace and a really good action.

Where England were in a different league was the spinners. Ours darted them in and bowled way too short. Whereas Tom Prest really bowled slow, got lots of turn with his offies. He dismissed our three best batsman, can't ask more than that!

The one who really stood out though was Rehan Ahmed the leg spinner. He bowls at a quick pace with an action that looks like a mixture of Mushtaq Ahmed and Rashid Khan. His leg spinners don't turn much but just enough and he has a big spinning googly which flummoxed one of our openers. I was very impressed.
