What's the actual benefit of having a weird crabwalking stance like Fawad Alam, Chanderpaul et al ?

So the previous innings in test cricket saw both openers, Rory Burns and Dom Sibley, being dismissed for ducks.

Now, this innings have both openers, Butt and Abid, being dismissed for 1.

This surely belongs in the "most useless stats" thread?

Historically at least, it was believed that side-on actions really help in generating swing

There's at least answers to what benefits can be derived from either type of action; it's easier to bowl accurately with a front-on action, it's potentially easier to generate pace with a side on action because of hip rotation etc etc

Some of these blokes also decided to change to the crab-walking stance when they were already fairly deep into their careers, so presumably there's some benefit to be gained from it for particular batsmen. I just want to know what it is.

Like the open stance is to see the bowler running up more clearly? Right-handed batsmen all appear to have a more open stance when right-handed bowlers are bowling from around the wicket OR Left Armers bowling over.

Hall and Griffith not being on that list made me curious to look at some footage pf Griffith. Big, looping arm action; he's kind of fun to watch. Also those diagonal run-ups were pretty much the norm it seems.

Here's Hall as well. Probably not the best bowling he ever sent down but he has an elegant action. Builds up a lot of momentum during that run up as well, clearly a gifted athlete.

The problem with Roach and Holder are that they're pretty useless away. If either could get their average under 30 (away) by the time they call it a day, then they'll be worthy of being mentioned along side the Walshs and Bishops of yesterday....
