Well, it is also the strength of Ballance's career FC record compared to the others that I selected him too - that was a big factor (47.05 career FC average). Not many options for opener, which is why Hameed is getting a chance in my team with Sibley dropping out (considering his 11 test long struggle with the bat). I just don't think Vince, or Malan, are as good as Ballance for FC (or Test) cricket (and the stats heavily favour Ballance) - but that's your call. Pope we will have to see about long term - he got 19 tests and where he could play (5or6) is a bit packed with options, especially with Stokes available (number 5, leaving only room at 6 where Buttler favours heavily statistically), clearly a talented player though (just a shame he didn't cash in more in tests and only averages a shade over 30).I’ve mentioned before that I’m a Gary Ballance fan, but I don’t think he’s a viable option for England now, alas. You can’t recall him to the Test side in 2021 based on how well he played in 2014. He’s not been at his best even at County level the past couple of seasons.
Without wanting to be too negative I also don’t buy that moving Hameed from 3 to open is a silver bullet either. His record at 3 is bad because he was tried there when his form as an opener was at a career low, in the hopes that moving down a slot might help him get his game back in order (it didn’t). Maybe he'll get moved up anyway if Silverwood gets ruthless and cuts Sibley.
Honestly, I think Vince might be the best option at 3 if we just want a short-term fix for the rest of this series and then the Ashes. Not because I think he’d do very well, just less badly than the alternatives. (Maybe.) It’s no way forward longer-term though. I guess we’re just hoping that Pope gets his game back in order and cracks Test cricket at the 3rd(?) attempt - and that Stokes gets well of course.
Another point to mention is Bairstow averages under 30 in 30 tests in the top 5, and 27.38 in 28 tests when he's not keeper. But right now he's the 2nd highest run scorer in the series for England (and Wales) by a country mile with a 29.5 average. England (and Wales) are in a hole! You can only pick the best possible team and do your best - give yourself the best chance. We didn't do that last game - Silverwood and Root lost the plot with the top 3 (and Root with his captaincy). Still, winning the next Test is possible at home - have to play very well though, but the team are capable of it.
