frustrating that our openers have suddenly become good at the same time our 3-5 have decided to **** themselves

How many batting orders in history have all functioned well together in totality all at once? It must be exceedingly rare.

All 6 of the top 6 firing at once would be pretty rare, yeah but it's comical how both Indian openers are firing yet the entire middle order is completely ****. Everyone in the top 6 averaging 40+ almost never happens I think. Kohli being his usual self and Pujara being good for 32(78) isn't too much to ask for imo.

Yeah it just feels like a pretty familiar story from an Australian POV. "One part of the batting lineup functions, partially covering up for the dismal failure of the other part" has been a pretty common occurrence for us for ten years, and I think it'd be the case for a lot of countries. Especially ones reliant on one or two gun batsmen, which is most of them.

I'd guess that 5/6 of the top six all averaging 40+ with one or two much higher for an extended period is ATG or at least world-leading standard. Just doesn't seem to happen.

I think England had a stretch like that under Flower. Even in purely statistical terms it’s always very unlikely.

How high did the averages of the windies top 6 get? Haynes, gordon, viv, Richie, Lloyd, gomes could have all averaged 40+ if Richie had a good start

It's the timing of the switch. Your 3 best 40-50 averaging batsmen collectively getting the shits and averaging 20ish for 2-3 years is really woeful and exceedingly rare too.

Dravid was in relatively **** form when the lineup peaked in late 2000s.
Hmm, what about earlier in the decade - I am thinking around the Australian tour of 2003ish. I think it was Sehwag, Dravid, Tendulkar, Ganguly and Laxman - all were going pretty good? I think the opener on the other side of Sehwag was always a question but that might have been just about the best overall batting lineup in Indian history. If I remember correctly, all five of them scored a century in that four Test series...Tendulkar and Dravid both scored a double century. And I know Sehwag and Laxman also came close and scored some big runs.

Can't remember what year it was but im certain there was a time that Indian top 6 all had averages north of 50 except VVS who was 46 or something.

They always had one dodgy opener in those days. They even tried to make Yuvraj and Pathan do it. Maybe someone like Gambhir had a gun start at home though; that could have worked.

India lineup for the 4th Gavaskar test this year was something like Rohit Gill Pujara Rahane Agarwal & pant, pretty sure they would have had career averages of 40+ during/after the game.

India's Lineup around the 2017 border Gavaskar may have all averaged 40 if Vijay Rahul Che pu Kohli Rahane Nair was a lineup they fielded, last 4 definitely all averaged 40, Rahul was on a hot streak at the time so he would have, uncertain about Vijay.

Aus during the 2016 home summer vs Pak may have. Warner Renshaw Usman Smith Handscomb all would have averaged 40 and played together that series, but think marsh or Hilton was at 6 and don't think any of those 2 spuds would have averaged 40.

If we don't get any injuries this summer could see a lineup of Warner Pucovski marnus Smith green head all averaging 40. Afghanistan and a severely depleted England on home decks sounds like free runs, marnus Smith and Warner all average 40 and head's career aveage is a smidge below 40 somehow, just need green and puc to score big once or twice, which shouldn't be to hard.
