*Official* Second Test at Lord's - Aug 12-16 2021

Oh won't blame Boycott for it specifically, as objectionable as he was, but yeah been saying it for years, the fact that Gatting's reverse sweep seems to have been castigated beyond all reasonableness, when they were in an alright position at the time in that WC final, and there were about 5 other silly but conventional dismissals after which don't get mentioned, put us back 20 years in thinking.

Oh and whilst everyone says Barrington was a lovely bloke and as I say hugely under-rated batsman, he was a hideously negative coach, but he wasn't alone.

It's an ethos in our sporting tradition, that wants to eradicate genius for technical perfection. Root may well do a bit of both, so get through the mire..
This post stinks of Ian Bell

Maybe this might slow down the hype regarding the Indian bowlers. very good clearly but nowhere near the level of NZ

Shiv for the West Indies for a few years .
Well Andy Flower obviously comes to mind.

It is interesting whilst India and New Zealand have come to be incredibly consistent sides through team achievement, the old enemy England and Oz are reliant on a few World-class performers amongst a swamp of mediocrity.

is it worth trying a short ball tactic at root in this series?

when he was pulling or trying to pull siraj in that brief spell when bairstow got out, it was the only moment when he looked vulnerable

Whatever it takes!!!
He is a great batsman in great form. Gotta try different strategies and plans for sure, but I dont think you can call those weaknesses.

He's in imperious form. We could use some galaxy brain tactic from Ashwin in the next game.

Root will treat Ashwin like a sweeping-sehwag. Our only hope is for lord fardul Quaker to be fit by the 3rd test and assert his dominance.

Whatever it takes!!!
Ash did get Root multiple times in India. He can be useful against Root. Plus, if they get in Malan, there will be more lefties in the top 6 too.

ashwin needs to come in for shami and we need to rest one of bumrah or siraj for the 4th and 5th tests next game and hopefully thakur comes in

I get the sinking feeling though that they will bring in Shardul for Shami, and Vihari for Pujara and say that Vihari will bowl the required offspin. :(

Yeah don’t get me wrong, England’s long-term failure to produce good batsmen is a big part of the story.

I’m sure there are plenty of plausible theories. I’m tempted to blame Boycott for instilling a culture of fearful batting. I don’t think other countries had the same hang-ups about getting out playing attacking shots. The English pundits, especially Boycott, used to get quite personal about it. Getting out cutting or sweeping was stupid, selfish, irresponsible, pathetic. Waiting patiently to nick a length ball was the only acceptable way to get out.
There's still quite a bit of that culture in English cricket IMO. It's surely part of the explanation for why a generation of very talented batsmen who clearly excel at the most difficult, rarest but also most important facet of basic batsmanship -- core hand-eye coordination, i.e. your mechanical ability to hit a fast-moving object with a wooden bat -- and have translated that into great LO success have really struggled to do so at Test level in the English system in a way that many systems haven't to the same extent (WI excepted), despite probably being the most well-resourced domestic system in the world, and why they've ended up with a bunch of Dom Sibleys and Keaton Jennings instead who, unless in absolute peak form, can occupy the crease, but otherwise can't do a lot else.

Is this regarding performance in England or overall?

In England NZ is superior no doubt but overall no one even comes close to India.

This Indian bowling hasn't had a bad series since Kohli took over. Even in their worst moments, they have averaged 32ish.

New Zealand were really really poor in Australia and I expect them to be poor in India in November.

The new zealend attack that played in aus where nowhere near there best tbh, and even with that they weren't horrible. Wagner had a great series, southee averaged low 30's and got dropped from the 3rd test for no reason, kj didnt play and boult played one test while half fit, the real issue was there batting not being able to cope with the aussie attack and there bowlers outside southee wagner and CDG partially, where absolute dogshit. Didn't help that Ferguson broke down part way into the first test.

All of that isn't an excuse though, india where playing a second xi bowling attack by the end of the australian series and still doing fantastic against a comparative aussie lineup.

I think that NZ attack was also kind of undercooked and/or just unprepared for the physical test that the Australian conditions -- particularly that Perth test -- would play. When they were forced to basically bowl for two straight days in 40C+ shade heat, they were totally done for the entire series. Only Wagner really was able to cope with those conditions and maintain his physical standards throughout.

It's a factor that often goes unremarked in these discussions on how good certain attacks are in certain conditions. All the impressive averages and skill in the world won't help much if you're physically out on your feet after four sessions of the series. It's not even just the bowlers who suffer either.

Can anyone tell how many Runs Root needs to break Mo Yousuf's record of 1788 runs in a Calendar year?
He’s on 1244 now, so would need 544 runs in 6-ish tests for the record.

2021 is actually Root’s third best year for total runs right now, after 2015 and 2016. He needs another 223 for a personal best.

Boult & Southee have never been much good in Australia

Jamieson is a much better bowler

Btw, I will be very surprised if Jimmy even plays in the Ashes and can’t blame him
