why on earth would you play at that on the last ball of the day Rahane

Good day. Really strong position. Hopefully we get to 500.

Whatever it takes!!!
Rohit's was the knock of the day. Amazing how different his mentality seems to be, compared to Virat. I think he might have had a lesser control percentage than Kohli even today, but he puts it behind him and takes the opportunities to score that he gets. Virat is way too held up in many thoughts that he seems to be forgetting that he just has to figure out a way to score runs. Rahul was solid and it is good to see the solid Rahul back after a while. Puji seems gone for now. :( Hopefully we see some runs from Jinx, lot more runs from Rahul, Pant and Jaddu tomorrow.

The sons showed their class among the bowlers. Sam continues to be a mixed bag but Wood and Moeen were very disappointing.

When was the last time Kohli played a cut shot?
it's hard to cut when you're always looking to get on the front foot. look at some of the shots rahul has played the past 2 games, it's just not a part of Kohli's repertoire. All things considered 42 runs isn't a bad return. If he got some of his touch back he might not go feeling for many of the deliveries that he did today.

I feel disgusted and sorry for him in quick succession. Like (a) how does an elite experienced Test batsman, a vice-captain, show such utter lack of awareness? Then, (b) I realize he most likely has the same pronounced case of anxiety that the average guy might and that all these years of playing at the highest level apparently haven't helped him to regulate that nervousness at the start of his innings.

He doesn't have that hunger maybe if someone in BCCI fires him as a captain he can get back to business.

Atleast he used to cut against the spinners now he is just playing for survival.

Watched a lot of the day. Rahul, Rohit and Jimmy were in a different league to everyone else. With India's four number 11s, I think their score can be regarded as more like 276/4 and so not as ahead as it seems. Pujara looks completely shot. I think as a temporary measure he should bat at six next innings and then they should think about whether they can bring in Shaw or SKY. Not that they'll do better but I don't think it is doing Pujara any benefit playing while he's like this.

I think they may consider Vihari although do expect Che to get the series.

It didn't help Vihari that he did SFA in the county games he played sadly.

baby steps...we need to focus on getting to 350 without losing more than one additional wicket...if we can do that, 400-450 is in sight...

If they don't go past 400, it would be a very disappointing result. The tail is long but this is where the great sides should push through their advantage.

I've fallen down a rabbit hole of looking for fast bowlers since 2000 with worse bowling records in England than Wood. There aren't many - for obvious reasons it's very unusual to play so many games with such a poor record. A few players are doing worse over 5+ games. Mostly fast guys who didn't move it much and played when their teams' fast bowling stocks were low. Sreesanth, Fidel Edwards, Jerome Taylor, etc.

The weird anomaly is Chaminda Vaas averaging 78 in England. I guess he just never figured out the Duke.

The only fast bowler doing worse than Wood over 10+ games is Brett Lee. They share an unfortunate ability to make fast, accurate deliveries look absolutely harmless.

fast, straight and moderately accurate doesn't dismiss test standard batsmen, even if they find it uncomfortable. if you're super accurate then sure you're just a premium corridor bowler (morkel, harmison briefly), and if you move it then you're going to cause trouble (starc) but wood is one of those dudes who needs a quick deck to maximise his strength and mitigate everything else. you don't find many super quick decks in england.
