there's not much the coach or captain can do to improve this side though

people like to pretend the most visible faces are responsible for team fortunes, but sporting success is built on boring foundations laid 5-10 years prior to present. englands lack of batting and patchy away bowling is a symptom of whatever was happening in first class and youth cricket in 2015.

i don't know enough about england to be too critical but i've always suspected the number of counties dilutes the player pool and some of the domestic conditions i've seen on the youtube livestreams aren't really representative of test cricket even in england sometimes.
I think it's just more interesting to focus on what could be done differently game-to-game rather than talking about the role of long-term structural factors.

Root has repeatedly made WTF decisions throughout his time as captain. It's hard to say how much difference a better captain would have made, but I'd be surprised if it hasn't cost them a few games.

Ideally Morgan would be the captain right now, seeing as he's proven himself in limited overs. Root averages 7 more when not captain too. But probably too late in the day now when Morgan's thinking about retiring in limited overs.

Superb from Lokesh Jnr

Good start, need Kohli to make runs and for KL to ton up. Wicketless 3rd session plz

Pup Clarke

Cricketer Of The Year
Don't like to make these kind of predictions usually (love the guy) but Pujara looks shot. Like totally gone at this level. Either that or he just needs to have time away from the side and get back to Ranji Trophy for a full season

Needs to play some LO cricket

Arachnodouche

International Captain
If Pujara had the ability I'd almost advocate for him to come out and go nuts for once. He's tied himself up in knots with the deadbatting mindset. Not surprised indecisiveness has now crept into his technique.
