I watched most of the day's play and have to hold my hands up and say that India bowled far better than I expected. They all looked good. Bumrah looked like his old self, getting more swing than I've seen him get in Test cricket for a long time. The way he cleaned up Anderson was tremendous and would have done for many top order players. Shami was the pick of the bowlers, applying incredible pressure. Siraj was a tad wayward but looked a dangerous wicket-taking option and clearly bowled aggressively. And Thakur was pleasantly surprising in how he kept it tight and consistently swung it away with the newish and old ball. Thakur's loose ball is outside off and it was not punished by England as they were reluctant to swing outside the off stump against the moving ball. This allowed him to apply pressure.
England's batting, on the other hand, was poor. Ollie Robinson's dismissal was soft and Root will be kicking himself for missing a 79mph ball on the stumps that did not move much. Lots of the others will be disappointed with dismissals also. It really showed the impact of the relentless pressure that India applied. However, I think Root and Robinson are the two dismissals that I think England will think did not need to happen. It is why England got 183 in conditions where at least 250 is par.
India's batting line-up is very soft too. Jimmy and Broad are never far from tearing through a team and today, Curran and Robinson looked more dangerous. I think India will need some counterattacking knocks else they'll be out for under 200 too. India need to try to get rid of the slips through some aggressive batting to allow them the freedom to score off the balls outside off. I don't think digging in will get India anywhere and it is up to Kohli, Rohit, KL, Rahane, Pant, Jadeja and Thakur to try to apply the pressure while Pujara is the rock.
This match, in my opinion, is evenly poised with India only slightly ahead and it is a real shame that the rain will likely cause this to be a draw. Judging by BBC, we'll have two sessions tomorrow and then difficult to say how much play in the following days.
