SA are the only no.1 side since AUS to beat a no.1 side away from home ( ENG 2012) . And Steyn played a big role in that
And WI of the 80s failed to beat Nz in Nz. As a matter of fact, NZ didn't lose a single test series at home and Hadlee was very instrumental in that.

You don't think their late 2000s lineup with Cook, Strauss, Trott, KP, Bell, Prior was all that? It was their best batting lineup in ages.
Doesn't change the fact that Steyn struggled (relatively speaking) vs them. I will concede that Steyn generally faced better batting. The only comparable team from Hadlee's time would be the WI and we'll he did excellent vs them.

The fact is, Hadlee has a much more rounded record than Steyn. And having seen both I have no doubt Sir Richard is better. The dude was box office....

Steyn's record in Australia being described as deficient is just ....incorrect? 31 wickets in just 7 games @28 in an era with the flattest Australian wickets in history and a far far better batting lineup than in Hadlee's time is pretty great. Imagine if he got to bully joe mennie and adam voges on friendly wickets like philander did.
I agree.. But it was just for the sake of argument. Average of 28 is not poor by any means especially when you consider the conditions.

It's not poor but when it comes to comparing atg these little things do make a difference. India, Sri Lanka, Australia and England were better during Steyns era no doubt about that. But he was very good vs half these teams, great vs the others. Hadlee was great vs the only really great batting lineup of his time and great vs everyone else (except for away to Pakistan). No reason to think, given better batting that Hadlee still wouldn't have excelled.

Fewer holes in Hadlee's cv afaic plus the guy was just seriously that good. He was the Glenn McGrath before there was Glenn McGrath.

Not in Pakistan.. Steyn was better in Asia..
Hadlee averaged 22 and struck at 43 in Asia. He had ONE poor series in Pakistan, that's it. By way of comparison, Steyn averaged 24 and also struck at 43 in Asia. Steyn was great in India and Pakistan and middling in SL and the UAE (over 10 tests).

Therefore, Hadlee was great in Asia. If we're going to hold 3 tests against Hadlee, then it's only fair to hold 10 tests against Steyn.

One poor series right at the beginning of his career, when he was a tearaway and had yet to focus on medium pace accuracy.

It's a shame he never really had an opportunity to rectify it. Marshall almost ended up in the same boat. Horrible first series in India when he was part of a second WI team. Fortunately, MM was able to redeem himself in the 1983 revenge tour.

Steyn played in a lot more countries and played far fewer tests per country. Unless he was twice the player Hadlee was, or was as consistent as Chris Martin was with the bat, OFC Steyn is going to have more holes in his record.

He played 4 away tests per country on average. A single poor series rips his record anywhere, and in a lot of cases, a single poor game is likely to as well. Its a bit of a miracle he never ended up doing poorly anywhere, especially when considering that he was inconsistent by ATG standards.

24 at 43 in Asia with some of the flattest pitches ever vs most of those Asian team’s ATG line ups..
