Best 2 Teams (1965 to 2015)

The opening position is the most specialized of batting positions. It lays the groundwork and foundation of the innings. It is not to be trifled with, nor experimented with in an AT XI. Stability and solidity is paramount and preferable over creativity.
Dravid was an opener almost entire first half of his career... remember those mornings, had to get up sharp at 3:30 (Aus or N.Z) if wished to see Dravid coming out to bat, missed an over, he was already there...those Ajay Jadejas, Navjot Sidhus, Shiv Sunder Dases, Sadagoppan Rameshes Devang Gandhis....and India had this wonderful tradition of sending wicket keepers to open, specially overseas...deep dasgupta, Sameer dighe, Ajay ratra, Saba Karim, Nayan mongia...I am sure forgetting few others...

Cummins had one test by 2015. Also Ponting behind Stokes?

Not the finest hour for HB

Not much in it at all. Gilchrist and Warne the main advantages for the newer team. Would be a fun matchup to watch for sure.

Sehwag to open and Lara at 3, very vulnerable top order...

Depends on the pitches I suppose. Far worse players than those two have scored runs against those players so I won't rule it out. Any who

Interested to know, who were those far worse players than Sehwag and Hayden you have in mind that scored runs against that kind of a bowling line up in a consistent basis?

Have only watched cricket since 89-90, so will go for the 90s-2015 side:

G Smith (c)
V Sehwag
B Lara
S Tendulkar
B Stokes
R Ponting (vc)
A Gilchrist (wk)
S Warne
W Akram
P Cummins
C Ambrose

On turning tracks, Murali can come in for one of the seamers and/or you may even replace Stokes with Shakib.
By the 31st of December 2015 Ben Stokes had played 20 tests and averaged 27.72 with the bat and 40.67 with the ball.

At the same time Pat Cummins had played ONE test (and had done superbly well as a youngster on debut vs SA) but it was unknown if he would play any more due to his injury problems.

I actually think HB's side is ok, ignoring that it was supposed to only be until 2015.

Stokes above Ponting in the order is a head scratcher and McGrath should be first bowler picked but other than that I dig it

1940-1965 might be even better (terrifying pace attack backed up by Laker and an insane batting lineup with Bradman at 3 and Miller at 7). Could pick Benaud instead of Tyson depending on pitch conditions to make an amazingly balanced attack and deepen the batting.

Hutton
Morris
Bradman (c)
Barrington
Weekes
Walcott (wk)
Miller
Lindwall
Laker
Trueman
Tyson

Hayden scored International 100s against all of the great 1990s bowlers except Ambrose.

There's footage of him weathering a pretty lethal spell against Shoaib Akhtar and scoring a 100 against a full strength Pakistan lineup in the 90s.

He scored 2 big hundreds and averaged 64 vs McGrath in domestic cricket. 181 at the GABBA is on youtube vs McGrath. GABBA has been one of the hardest places to open for touring openers over the last 30 years, mainly because of McGrath.

He averaged 107 vs Pollock, Donald, Kallis and Ntini in 2001/02.

He had 2 good tours of South Africa in 2002 and 2006. The toughest place to open. Made 2 hundreds and 2 90s. He failed in both innings of a dead rubber which brought his aggregate down in 06.

Allan Donald and Waqar Younis picked him in their alltime XI.

This myth that Hayden couldn't score against quality pace bowlers is ridiculous.
