Meet the ICC Hall of Famers: Sunil Gavaskar

I mean, fmd 1/340 odd in 60 something overs is insane, I don't care the attack or the conditions. Chasing that one down witout Richards or Lloyd even batting is ridiculous.
yep, that one is etched in my memory for sure, a spectacular innings...just toyed with the england bowling...

Those cuts fmd

Did a lot of batsmen have trigger movements back then?
Back and across in anticipation of the short ball was most batsmen's first instinct back then and the genuine fear of getting a serious injury may have had something to do with that

I thought this thread was about Hall of Famers. Not even the freakiest of sceptics can deny his right to be in this thread. :tooth:

Gavaskar averaged 21 against Lillie. Not to discredit him of course where he was a fantastic batsman.

Yes that’s why people are discussing him.
Why? He played only four tests. One series. Doesn't deserve a mention in the same breath as Gavaskar, Sutcliffe etc who sweated their guts out for decades across the globe! Even in the first four tests, gavaskar did better than B.Richards. He doesn't belong here.

Barry Richards played 5 matches in WSC, averaged 79 against the likes of Lillee, Holding, Roberts and Garner.
For me, he played 9 tests.

Averages against individual bowlers now? **** me
He averaged 17 out here the only time he faced a full strength attack. if you include the ROW series in which he opened in the early 70s, it's about 25 or something. His record here otherwise is a classic case of a very good player bullying some rubbish line ups. And credit to him for doing it, but let's never pretend he performed well here against strong attacks. He just didn't.

He averaged ~40+ vs West Indies even when they had strong attacks (yes his 700+ first series didn't come against the strongest attacks, but he had good series after that too). Also did very well against Pakistan.

Yeah I know. I’m not saying he’s a horrible player, I’m saying his record here warrants scrutiny, because he was fortunate to tour here at arguably the two weakest points in Australian post-war cricket (which basically means the weakest points ever).

But it's one nation - and it's not like Lillee toured India either to make it up so....
Sample size: 3 tests in matches vs Lillee. 3 matches out of 125.

You'd have a point with regards to scrutinising his record there if he had similar such holes elsewhere - e.g averaging 100 or whatever vs a crap Windies attack but only ~20 odd when the proper team showed up. But that's simply not true.

My point was also specific to averages against a SINGLE individual bowler (and that's not even in a match involving Lillee, but specifically an average VS Lilee)
That's just bull**** - this is how you start getting into "But he had a broken fingernail at that time and clearly wasn't in the right mood to play cricket/out of form" etc crap.

For the record, if the above is true, then he averages higher vs Lillee (21) than he does in a match involving Lillee (19) so....

A better stat is this: In matches involving any of Lillee, Botham, Holding, Marshall, Garner, Imran, Hadlee - a total of 61 matches - he averages 50+

Not having a go at you by the way, just earlier regarding a specific average vs one specific bowler only - a match size sample of 3 tests.
