Dravid struggled really hard against Mendis, not particularly against Murali imo. Kandy 4th innings chase was superb.

Kallis played kumble better than basically anyone Ive seen (Inzi dominated him on a few occasions too). Height must have helped him negotiate him more easily maybe.

Yeah, Dravid and Kallis struggled against Murali but Sanga can't get points for that since he didn't play against Murali. With other spinners, their records are very close in balance.
All three are very close to each other. Sanga played Warne and Ajmal the best. He hardly played Kumble. He did play Murali pretty well in domestic circuit, the bowler who had wood on Sanga was Vaas. Swann says Kallis played him best, so will give that to Kallis. Dravid played Herath the best AFAIK. Sanga struggle against Ashwin, Swann and Lyon.

It is a mixed bag, all three are very close to each other when it comes to playing spin.

Did dravid even play against herath? His work against swann in the 2011 eng tour was a delight.

Very magnanimous of you.

I remember the opposite. Warne dismissed him four times out of five tests and i struggle to think of any notable performance other than a match saving 70 odd ending after getting bowled through the gate by Warne. Non of the three guys in this thread played Warne particularly well but Kallis did make few hundreds albeit not looking very comfortable

Come to think of it, its weird that Ponting always looked pretty good against Murali but struggled against a far inferior off spinner. Maybe the bounce i don't know

The same match in the first innings he played Warne very well, till he decided to run down the track and hit him out of the park.

And of course I don't rate any dismissal that happened due to rough or cracks.

Migara, do you say that Murali did not take advantage of any rough or crack in the pitch?

Getting wickets from the rough is a big part of bowling spin

looks like the quicker overs pinner there. Certainly not the slow flighted big turner all though it turned a fair bit

Kallis bombs spinners mate. Bloke has a ridiculous number of sixes for a guy who batted at snail pace for most of his career and those sixes did not come against the quicks
Kallis has his own temperament and game, maybe most batsmen out there are not comfortable attacking. Same can be said for Sehwag who scored 8500 runs without working on his footwork at all, this can be seen as laziness but that's how he plays his game.

Rarely he did. The only left armer Vaas was short amd light compared to many fast bowlers and as a result very little rough was created for Murali. Herath was benefited more because the faster bowlers played during his time was much taller and heavier than Vaas, and used to hit the crease very hard unlike Vaas. And Murali was not a big fan bowling on to rough as well, because he was a guy who wanted exactly to know what the ball is going to do.

Kumar was a wanker of the highest order. I have never been able to like him. Look at his 200s.

vs Paksitan, Lahore, Mar 6 - 10 2002 - 80 wanker runs. Sri Lanka would have won without them.
vs Zimbabwe, Bulawayo, May 14 - 17 2004 - 120 wanker runs It was Zimbabwe - what a wanker!
vs South Africa, Colombo (SSC), Aug 11 - 15 2004 - 82 wanker runs. Easy win without them.
vs South Africa, Colombo (SSC), Jul 27 - 31 2006 - 137 wanker runs. Weren't needed at all.
vs Bangladesh, Colombo (PSS), Jul 3 - 5 2007 - 50 Wanker runs. Clearly wanked hard until Jayawardene declared on him.
vs Bangladesh, Kandy, Jul 11 - 14 2007 - 72 wanker runs. Enjoyed his **** from the previous game too much it seems.
vs India Colombo (SSC), Jul 26 - 30 2010 - 69 wanker runs. not needed. Lots of wanking in that game.
vs Bangladesh Chattogram, Feb 4 - 8 2014 - 169 wanker runs. Wanking allowed Bangladesh to draw. Tried to **** again in second innings.
vs Pakistan Galle, Aug 6 - 10 2014 - 71 wanker runs. This one is probably passable.
vs New Zealand Wellington, Jan 3 - 7 2015 - 53 wanker runs. Couldn't **** when the match needed to be won in the 4th innings.

But taking advantage of the rough was a huge strength of bowlers like Warne and Ashwin. That is a skill too. To be able to pitch it on the rough consistently when they want to and get the ball to dismiss the batsman.

There are two teams playing the game and bowlers from the opposite side can also create cracks/rough for Murali especially on dry Sri Lankan wickets.
