Spain getting into gear only to finish second in their group makes the top half of the draw look much stronger.


Unless something weird happens*, Belgium, Italy and one of Portugal/Germany are competing for one semi final 1 spot, while Spain and France/Germany are competing for the other.

In the bottom half the Netherlands are getting a relatively cushy gig to get to the semis, and whoever ends up playing England will probably fancy it too with the winner of Sweden/Ukraine up next. If Hungary pull of a win and knock Germany out, with France winning, then Hungary will play England and pretty much all the big names are up top.

'Something weird happening' is Portugal crashing out by losing 3-0 or worse to France, in which case Finland will play Sweden in the bottom half and Ukraine move over to the other side.

Forgot about the H2H rule.

I would suggest that England would be absolutely kissed on the proverbial with the current arrangement - Hungary in the last 16 while France and Germany both head over to the same side of the draw as Belgium, Spain and Italy.

Despite my concerns that final round of games absolutely did not disappoint.

I should have more faith in major tournament group stages. No matter how hard the authorities try to ruin them, they're just always fantastic.

I think hosting the tournament in multiple countries has worked well. Giving countries without enough big stadiums for the full tournament the chance to see major tournament football is a great idea. Obviously ruined by the pandemic restrictions.

Only one that comes close is France 98 when Bergkamp got THAT goal v Argentina and Croatia beat Germany 3-0.

Off top of my head, maybe the 98 QFs.

Croatia beat Jerry 3-0 and then Bergkamp's magnum opus knocked out Argentina.

Although I may be letting parochial concerns colour that with a rose tinge.
