*Official* South Africa in West Indies 2021

In the IPL, Hetmyer showed that he can rotate the strike and run the hard runs along with going big. This was a chase perfectly suited for him…and of course he eats spinners for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Windies are really missing a trick by ‘punishing’ him.

Im trying not too be too harsh, but it really feels like Fletcher killed that chase for us. He racked up the dots resulting in batsmen at the other end going too hard too early.

I agree Hety should be in.

Fletcher has always been very block or blast as far as I can remember. It's just that his blasting is not on the level of a Gayle for example.

Look,SA definitely have the bowlers who can win them T20 games. My concern is the batting. Every single one of the batsman can have a good day and score you 70(50) but they can also scratch around and score 40(45).

I'd still love to see Faf and Morris involved.

Overall, I`m not overly bothered about T20. But Faf will not alter the fact that our top 6 is largely the same type of player that should only bat top 3 in a T20 game. Markram should be playing instead of Klaasens. And we need to rejig the order. Personally think Bavuma and QDK should open with Markram at 3, vdDussen at 4, Miller at 5 and SA need to find another quality clean hitter at 6. Possibly give somebody like Rickelton an opportunity at 6.

And cannot have Ngidi, Nortje and Rabada in the team. Tail is to long. Not really Ngidi's format, Nortje has the pace to still trouble batsmen even when the ball is just straight, so probably need to replace Ngidi with Mulder or Phehlukwayo.

But there is the proverbial 'pecking' order and seniority that needs to occur for the next undetermined number of games before we move on from some of these players.

I find their exclusion a little strange. I get that they're not long-term prospects, but with the T20 World Cup so close, it's surely got to be worth taking a look at them. I guess Faf might still be in the frame and they're just trying out other options right now, but Morris seems to have fallen by the wayside. His performances in ODIs haven't been as good as might have been hoped for, so maybe that's soured their view on him, but he's been going well in the IPL, which surely can't be completely disregarded.

I think SA as a whole hasn't bought into the fact that T20 cricket is a different beast. StephenZA has a great point about Ngidi. On his day he will strike upfront but I personally would have Phelukwayo over him. I think whatever tradeoff with the ball could be counteracted with having extra batting depth at 8.

Hendricks over Markram does not sit well with me. Again,Markram adds flexibility with the ball. Baffling with that selection.

I'm more of an advocate of Faf in T20 cricket than StephenZA is. I'd rather him at 3/4. I think the technical frailties that limited him in Tests aren't a factor in T20.

I'd probably like a team of:

1. Bavuma
2. QDK
3. Markram
4. Faf
5. Rassie
6. Miller
7. Linde
8. Phelukwayo
9. Rabada
10. Nortje
11. Shamsi.

I get the similarities between 4-6 ,but who is available that has a distinctly different style from those three?

Edit: Can you really afford only 5 bowling options these days? Hendricks being given an over last game was not a smart call.

I'd agree with that. Ngidi has a better average and strike rate than Phehlukwayo, but not by much and isn't as economical. Add in Phehlukwayo offering some variety to the quicker Rabada and Nortje, as well as being a better bat (even if his T20 batting record isn't the greatest) he does look like a better option.

Hendricks being given an over last game was not a smart call.
That was a bizarre decision. They'd manage to peg back the scoring after the wicket, and then decided to bring on a part-time spinner to bowl to Chris Gayle of all people. Was anybody really surprised by what then happened?
