Test team ratings since 1877

Update: 14 June 2021

Original ratings in brackets

India 121.54 (117.40)
New Zealand 116.70 (117.61)
Australia 114.75 (109.23)
England 106.00 (102.69)
Pakistan 99.18 (99.14)
South Africa 94.75 (95.33)
Sri Lanka 89.68 (92.79)
West Indies 88.51 (91.10)
Afghanistan 77.13 (81.66)
Ireland 70.12 (71.43)
Bangladesh 69.96 (76.75)
Zimbabwe 57.64 (69.71)

I have changed the formula since I last updated the ratings. Instead of updating after every match, I now update after every series. It is similar to the ICC team ratings in that a team gets 150 points for a win, 100 for a draw, and 0 for a loss. This is a team's base score, which is then adjusted by quality of opposition and whether they are playing home or away. Instead of a period of 4 years, a team's rating is adjusted after every series from the time of their first test match.

Australia and England began with a rating of 100.00 in 1877 and every new team since then begins with a rating of 75.00. There are no bonus points for series wins.

New Zealand are very slightly ahead of India on base rating, but India are ahead of adjusted rating because of their series wins in Australia and New Zealand's recent glut of victories at home.

I have attached the updated file as a reference.

Why is India 2021 not there though?

I try to have a least a five year gap between the peak ratings of each nation's team. Otherwise, the top 10 spots would be Australia after every series in the mid-2000s. This current India team peaked in 2017.

I dont think it is the same side though, coz the 2017 was still the remnants of Dhoni era but 2021 is very much the Virat era.

Though I do like the idea as a rule that you need to have a 5 year gap between peaks or cycles or however you wanna call them. That is very fair. I would even say a decade but what you got right now seems perfect. :)

Update: 29 June 2021

Base ratings in brackets

New Zealand 119.24 (119.23)
India 118.84 (114.03)
Australia 114.75 (109.23)
England 106.00 (102.69)
South Africa 99.89 (100.80)
Pakistan 99.18 (99.14)
Sri Lanka 89.68 (92.79)
West Indies 83.69 (86.99)
Afghanistan 77.13 (81.66)
Ireland 70.12 (71.43)
Bangladesh 69.96 (76.75)
Zimbabwe 57.64 (69.71)

Base ratings are adjusted by quality of opposition in recent matches (dependent on the base ratings of opposition) and whether a team has been playing the majority of their recent matches at home or away.

After beating India to win the inaugural world test championship, New Zealand moves to the no.1 ranking in my system for the first time ever!

I think my system is more in line with my own personal thinking. I didn't think New Zealand deserved the top ranking after they won against West Indies and Pakistan at home. But they have beaten England away and they won a neutral test against the previous top-ranked nation, so they are rightfully top of the pile now.
