Olympics - does anyone actually care anymore?

I've never been an 'Olympics Guy' but this edition just frightens me as opposed to the usual apathy I feel.

Whatever it takes!!!
I work currently on a project with a team in Japan and they said they were waiting for the vaccination as it was supposed to coincide with the Olympics.

Currently can't be arsed with Olympics or Euros, will change my mind once things start no doubt but gut feeling is neither should be happening.

Most people here wouldn't mind if it was cancelled, the IOC is basically strong-arming Tokyo though. I'm actually in the minority because I think it won't turn out to be as bad as everyone fears, virus-wise.

Japan hasn't had a serious outbreak yet has it? Seems unlikely that the Olympics would change that single-handedly but I guess you never know.

There was a poll from a few weeks back where something like 40% of Japanese wanted the games cancelled, and another 43% wanted the postponed.

I don't really care on a personal level but professional athletes in major Olympic sports have a very limited amount of Olympics they're in their physical prime for, so I'd really feel for them if it was canned entirely.

Depends on how you define "serious", the latest and worst one peaked at about 1000 people a day in Tokyo which is insane for an Australian but something Americans and Indians can only dream of at the moment (you wouldn't know that if you read some of the expat doomers on Twitter though).

The thing is any bump in cases is going to be blamed on the Olympics. There's a bunch of precautions but there'll definitely be some cases let through. Another huge outbreak won't be from the athletes directly but from all the people going to restaurants on the way back home after the day's finished.

This actually changed in the past few days after cases started dropping. I think people are more apathetic than anything.

Half the reason to become an Olympic athlete is to take part in the group orgies and they'll probably ban those this year, I would be so gutted.
