Imagine announcing retirement from your illustrious career and then being rested from one of the 2 Test matches you have left
For his own good to keep him fresh so that he can perform. If we are serious about winning the WTC we need fresh legs particularly the wicket keeper and the prime fast bowlers.

We can get away if England bats no more than say couple of session or three max each inning. What if they bat 4-5 sessions? Edgbaston is supposed to be flat.

Dude it'd be like playing the 3rd Test in a series. It isn't rest worthy.

NZ pretty much never change the side, at most Boult returns for Wags/Santa or CDG imo. no other changes.
I think so too... not expecting much changes other than probably Southee or Jamieson rested for Boult. Rest will remain the same. Just wish they rested our faster bowlers and BJ.

In a regular series you'll have lot more rest days I'd presume. Besides the bubble meant the loads for the bowlers couldn't be as they would like it to be. As long as there are no major injury before the wtc finals and the four fast bowlers are fresh all good. Just hoping England struggles with the bat and don't bat out many sessions.

Gilchrist never missed a single Test in his career which involved many 5 match series. Keepers don't need to be rested at that level, even if he wasn't retiring in a month

None of this holds up - even the bubble. Are you talking about quarantine? Plus India will be in the same boat, if not worse.

Just come out and say you want Watling dropped.

Just had a thought, wonder if anyone is looking back through Jofra's twitter for ***ist comments. From memory he had some iffy ones being thrown around a while back.

Typical there's 4-5 days rest between test matches in guessing. In a 5 test match series probably even longer. Just 3 days rest between test seems too less to me particularly heading into a wtc finals.

Yeah the quarantine non cricketing days allowing for no physical activity. Then 3 days rest between each test match.

India will be playing their first test and they'll be fresh as a daisy.

If the next test match goes to the wire a lot of our boys will be tired.

Nah want BJ to play the finals and retire taking the trophy home. He's a bit injury prone and last thing he should be missing the finals with fatigue or injury.

Surely 3 days of rest after wicket-keeping for what, 8 hours, is a perfectly okay amount? I mean, back in County Championship decades ago there'd be 120-over days, 1 day of rest between matches, 30 matches a season... and keeper Jimmy Binks played 388 consecutive CC games.

If KJ gets rested you know Doug will get the callup to give the lower order a bit more starch.

I want NZ to win this series - they'll get the 'lineal' Test championship if they do (England won it off SL, who won it off SA, who won it off Aus, who won it off SA, who won it off England, who won it off Aus, who won it off SA, who won it off Aus who won it off WI) - and we haven't won since England in '99 and will probably never get a better opportunity to do so. So on the basis that Taylor won't be dropped, the only change I'd make would be Boult for Santner.
I don't care about this lineal test thing (sounds even more made-up than the WTC), but yes I want to win the series, especially after we blew the last tour of England to draw 1-1 instead of winning 1-0 as we should've.

Boult must play, Santner must not play, so quite happy with a straight swap.
If people are really wedded to the idea that a bowler needs a rest and that there may be enough assistance to make spin bowling worthwhile, then I'd accept resting Southee for Ajaz as well. Or even for Rachin if they're feeling adventurous, which they won't be. But it's not essential.
No to other changes, especially Henry or Bracewell.

You're doing a lot of guessing, and almost all of it wrong. I have kept for 120+ overs a couple of times and it's very bad, but 3 days is more than enough time to recover. Also I'm not, and never was, anywhere near as match fit as a Test match wicket keeper. Unless he's got an actual injury, you're not going to rest a keeper from a Test match. Also would just love to see whoever pulls the short straw tell BJ he's being "rested" from his 2nd last Test match ever

Not Watling, but one or more of the pacemen perhaps. Australia did rote their quicks in 2019 and while that was a 5 test series, this one’s pretty tightly packed. And yes, the final is a 1st test for the opposition so there’s that.

The intensity, scrutiny and preparation including media duties etc for international is at a different level though.

Give this a thought, Australia went unchanged and India were forced to make changes during the test series due to injuries. The result, India won. Injuries happened, bowlers did fatigue.

Surely every player wanted to play every test match but didn't materialize did it?

Why do you think England rotate their players?

High stake does take a toll mentally as well. You can't compare county and club cricket to international.

If wtc finals was not happening it's all good but for the finals you need preparation + rest imo.

When you're talking 3 days rest between tests for an international side does not mean they just rest in their rooms. The preparation for a test match starts like at least 2 days prior. Without preparation most players don't take field either, they want to perform and not leave it to chance. Preparing mentally, physically and also practice. That's s lot to take. No matter how good of it matters you'll prepare and leave no stone unturned.

Nevertheless, just hoping no injuries and fatigue going into wtc finals. We'll forever remember a finals win over anything. Our cupboard is bare as for icc events barring one way back in 2000.

A win in wtc is way more important at least for me than beating England. I'll take both but if I must choose then it's the wtc finals.

Yeah feel the same. NZ have another shot at beating England next year, they tour for 3 tests I think. England and Australia have shown it can be prudent to rotate bowers if you have the options.
