Great performances in tests nobody talks about

yeah shakibs a monster. even if bangladesh put out a current indian standard side several times in the next century, it will take someone truly special to dislodge shakib from the allrounder position.
Since there hasn't been any mention thus far in this thread, the obvious answer to this post is to say 'unless they come up with a Jadeja'.

shakibs better, though sadly jadeja is closing the gap by improving beyond a glorified #8 who bowls fast and full on raggers.

Whatever it takes!!!

Its not a test but scoring 400+ unbeaten runs in a game where next best score was 56 and then taking 3 more wickets ensuring you played a part in each inning of the game is pretty amazing single handed domination of a game.

Merv Hughes 13 wickets including the world's longest hat trick vs the West Indies in Perth, 88/89 in a badly beaten side rarely rates a mention, Great bowling performance, especially after Lawson was ruled out of the game after having his jaw broken by Ambrose. Bowled nearly 40 overs and took 8/80 odd in the second dig. Massive effort. Player of the match in a side which lost by 170 runs doesn't happen to often.

Is that the hat trick in three overs?

Well it happened couple of years earlier. Ravi Ratnayeke took 8/83 off 24 overs in Sialkot. SL lost by 8 wickets, but Ravi became man of the match.

There was an Indian bloke who took 16 wickets in his first Test and beat Massie’s record by one run, but a lot of people have a hard time remembering his name.

Narendra Hirwani, I think it is a well known fact. And he won that match too. Then out bowled Kumble when they bowled together for the last time.

Edit: And took twice as much wickets too.

Ken (slasher) Mackay and Lindsay Kline's last wicket stand against at the Adelaide Oval in the second Test against the West Indies in the 1960/61 series in Australia. From memory they forced a draw by stopping a very good Windies pace/spin attack for two and a half hours until stumps thereby forcing a draw

Hadlee picking up 8/44 and scoring 99 in a match where England scored 82 and 93 was a decent effort.
That match was more notable because England had a few bowling injuries and County Cricket trundler Tony Pigott played just because he happened to be English and in New Zealand. What made it more comical was that he cancelled his wedding so he could play. Instead of taking that as an omen he rearranged the wedding for later.

The first England player to make a century in each innings of a Test match is never talked about.

A.C Russell, ( Jack) of Essex in 1922/23 v South Africa in Durban, making 140 + 111, England 281 + 241, S.A. 179 + 234, to win by 109 runs.

He opened the batting in the first innings, became ill and batted No 6 in the second, coming in at 26-4, added 92 for 10th wkt with Arthur Gilligan.

This proved to be his final Test Match, his form dropped off in county cricket for the next two year's, and when he was back to his best, Hobbs & Sutcliffe were entrenched.
His previous Test innings before the two centuries was a 96, so a great way to finish, 96, 140 + 111.

He played just 10 Test matches for 910 runs@56.87, with 5 centuries + 2 fifties.

I always like to give a bit of love to the forgotten players and matches of ages ago, because the past gave some amazing performances.

Hashim Amla averaged nearly 500 against India in INDIA in 2010. SA would have won that series if Morkel had survived 10 balls more.

Gillespie in 2004 tour in India.

further context: it was the Fifth Test of a 5-Test series and it was one-all
