*Official* New Zealand in England 2021

England’s session for sure. though whether NZ went far too much into their shell or England’s bowling (excellent really) merited that much respect is up for debate i guess. Doesn’t look the easiest surface either.

Thought the opening partnership did as well as it could and things stalled completely after that, but having to contend with a pretty handy spell from Robinson immediately after the opening burst meant NZ couldn’t really relax.

KW looks very out of sorts though. Needs to turn it around at Edgbaston else would be worried about him going into the final.

A bit surprised by the idea that New Zealand were somehow lacking in their approach or taking batting practise for the WTCF. The lead wasn't big enough to do anything other than play normally against high quality new ball bowling. It could have all gone wrong very quickly. They had to lay a foundation and see how things go early tomorrow. That last session was good hard Test Cricket that could have gone either way.

New Zealand seem a fragile cricket team by sending in Wagner as night watchman when they should have been pushing for a win.

Yeah, some real idealistic carry-on there. England's three main seamers bowled very well and were particularly hard to score off. It's not usually as simple as 'we should advance the scoring rate, and we can do so at will'. Yet people think that's exactly how it is. Anyone who thinks a Baz-led team would have pushed on...Baz led teams didn't exactly have it their own way in England, did they?

I'm perfectly happy for us to get time at the crease tomorrow, and continue to become accustomed to English conditions in match situation - something India isn't being afforded. If England bowls well again, we will have to play accordingly.

Will NZ set us something chaseable or take the draw with an outside chance of a 30 over collapse?

I mean I don't want us to lose but like grecian said the other night some entertainment would be nice. Would love to see us have a demanding but not impossible target

I honestly don't think so. The bowlers are in good shape, it's the batsmen that need the time at the crease. I love Test cricket as much as anyone, so does this team, but if anyone feels like they've not got eyes to two weeks' time at Southampton, I think that's naïve.

I know I grew up in a different era, but that last session battle between bat and ball with both teams trying to gain the initiative was entertaining. Anyone who just enjoys runs at eight an over should stick with the T20. Of course the the WTC Final is the big one for the summer the way the tour has fallen, but I don't think the approach so far in this innings has been governed by that.

I know you're not necessarily saying I've said the opposite but I did find it entertaining also. It was also the first session I got to watch properly which helped, but yeah. But if the game is petering out to a draw tomorrow I can't imagine that will be entertaining

Good chance for for the batters to get some time in tomorrow particularly Taylor...
There won't be a declaration, bowlers have had a good run and should now put their feet up.
Lathem is looking organized, glad after years of trying nz might have found a decent opening pair in trying conditions. Boult to replace Satner in the next test, if he's fit - he will need the run.
England really need to find a top order if they are going to get the ashes, do they make changes now in time for India or hope they come right?

That's a good point too, the more the bowlers are off their feet the better. And yes, agree - Boult in for Santner, we should have enough batting (not that Santner is a bat anyway) and Kane needs to do some bowling.

Surely Sipley is a dead horse. I don't know who is behind him, but his technique is absolute cannon fodder for India or Australia. At least with someone like Pope, you could imagine him scoring runs on any given day.

I rate pope, I think he will be a very good player unfortunately he doesn't bat in the top 3.
I thought for the longest that Root should step up and bat 3, no question he's got the technique and skills. I didn't really rate Burns either tbh but you can't argue with a 100 against a top attack in bowling friendly conditions.
So maybe Root 3 Pope 4 Stokes 5 Bairstow 6.
Looks fairly strong if they fix the top order.

Burns is a strange one isn't he. You don't ever feel like you did when Cook, or even Strauss, was there but he can play an innings. Feels like he will be around the team for years to come even if he does find himself in an out as with this winter

Admittedly he has a missed stumping off his bowling but Santner just isn’t a test bowler, really struggles to land 2-3 balls in the same area of an over.

I haven’t seen a lot of Rachin but would his bowling really be any worse? With Boult back I guess that means Santner would drop out but I think Southee, Boult, Jamieson, Wagner and de Grandhomme would be seam overkill. Anyway we could play Rachin at 7 with either de Grandhomme or Wagner dropping out?
