Makes people realise that being a racist cricketer has serious consequences

It's an overreaction but much more understandable than, for example, CA's reaction to sandpapergate. I support this move.
Except he wrote those tweets when he was much younger. Being a racist doesn't apply anymore (afa we know)

Big day for Santner. Make or break I think. Couple of them spun yesterday and I see he's spinning the ball lots more than I've seen before. As long as he's not bowling to Root he'll be all right. He could redeem with the ball for what he couldn't do with the bat.

Dukes ball is hard to grip, they're quite slippery with double lacquer. If you can keep the palm sweat free the thick seam helps gripping the ball better.

However Santner goes I'd hope he's still retained for the next game and bring in Ajaz next game to see how he goes as well. Give them both as much time in the middle as possible as one of them will definitely play in the wtc finals. Looks like he didnt bowl in the inter squad game which means he should be a lock in for wtc unless he does a horrible job in the two test matches. You'd wish Ajaz was was a reasonable fielder and could hold the bat like Wagner. He'll be a shoo in.

The 'NZ' batting 'performance' was a hard headed bloke from South Africa doing his thing as an outlier, while the same bunch of softies who flopped in Australia did theirs. The score-card shows what an 'oil and water' scenario this was. One classy batsman with a clear head just out there playing test cricket, and then a group of guys who crumple like a wet paper bag when outside of the comforts of home & their favoured 'fish out of water on NZ decks' sub-continental opponents.
What a total embarrassment. Should have been 450 at least when one bloke scored such a commanding double-century, and England should have been batted right out of the game. I've heard a lot of talk about 'fight' and 'grit' with respect to NZ sans Conway, but not much on display except for 60 odd 'homegrown Kiwi' runs from Nicols.

BJ Watling is a microcosm of NZ's batting ineptitude overseas against better sides. 'Nuggety, gritty, doughty'......at home on flat decks like Bay Oval and the Basin. Get him to Australia or England or India and he'll likely not trouble the scorers. Always goes into these series' hyped as an immovable object who will grind out big runs, and it doesn't happen. But he remains tidy with the gloves.

Yes, the batting totally flopped on their last big international assignment, that afore-mentioned disastrous Australian tour. Come to think of it, so did the bowling. The bowling was cannon fodder, Mitch Santner (the non-spinning spinner) was a laughing stock to the Aussie commentators, and the sole bowling performance of note came from a hard headed bloke from South Africa doing his thing as an outlier.

As far as tail end resistance goes in that 1st innings at Lords, it was a flop except for a hard headed bloke from South Africa doing his thing as an outlier. Why inept batting bunny Tim Southee would be batting ahead of Neil Wagner no-one will ever know. Wagner showed last year that he can now actually turn in some eye-catching performances as a lower order batsman, while Southee is clearly all at sea with his boat getting further from shore by the day.

Interesting to see NZ set up talking about 'when you lose one wicket you can lose a clump' to explain away a disastrous spineless collapse.
What a collection of weak dismissals. Poor prep? Conway was batting on kitty litter in the nets as his prep, and he still came out with the right attitude and performed. I'd back him to shut out all the negatives and just bat like that no matter what the location: could be Eden Gardens, the MCG, or Seddon Park.

Unfortunately for him - and us - the NZ team is still a collection of psychologically frail characters who can only really perform in their 'safe zone': a nice flat NZ pitch where the batsmen feel coddled and able to perform, and the bowlers can fall back on the tireless outlier Neil Wagner to break his back carrying them when the swing isn't there or the shine is off the new ball.
Well this was fun

will the ECB ban themselves for at least one test for being stupid enough not to have a social media security consultant for their players? because someone should really be sitting down with the players and educating them on their online presence and going through their history.

Am I the only one who finds it hilariously ironic that the most likely beneficiary of this whole mess is Craig bloody Overton of all people?

Also, definitely this

Hahahahahahahaha do people really believe this. It's basically the equivalent of that Office kiss scene whenever corporations do this.
It can make a difference at organisations depending on the real level of support and willpower to make change. But I meant if they didn't do anything then it really would be exposed as an empty gesture.

Banned for something he did long before he was picked, not a great look for the ECB. Suppose there was an element of damned if you do... But as others have said, not sure what lessons are learned from this. Hey ho

It's ****ing stupid. Do they even have people of colour participating in these decisions, or just white people at pains to be seen to be on the right side of the argument?

I wonder if nz will do any rotation for the second test, need a way for someone to push Taylor out of the 11 for the WTC. He's become that bad.

4 players already in the squad I'd rather play ahead of him. Sad, but true.

There's a case for this, but won't happen. Even if the top 6 have a miserable time of it in the second innings too, it'll (quite reasonably) be put down to lack of game time and they'll all get the second test to find some form. And NZ will be loathe to make any drastic changes for the final, particularly when it comes to the team's most experienced batsman and highest run-getter.

There's definitely a strong discussion to be had on whether if he's available he should make the first choice XI for the tests in India (thinking back to how he fared against Ashwin and Jadeja in 2016), but that's for another time/thread.

Its the James Gunn scenario. They have to do something immediately to avoid the look. But if they wait a while, they can walk it back. Surely the month between the WTC finals and the India series could be enough time to do that.
