Your All-time Premier League XI

Days of Grace

International Captain
Four Four Two Magazine recently published an article on their 100 greatest premier league players.

https://www.fourfourtwo.com/gallery/ranked-100-greatest-premier-league-players-ever

The top 10 were as follows:

1. Thierry Henry
2. Cristiano Ronaldo
3. Alan Shearer
4. Wayne Rooney
5. Eric Cantona
6. Frank Lampard
7. Paul Scholes
8. Steven Gerrard
9. Roy Keane
10. Patrick Vieira

No defenders or goalkeepers made the top 10. The highest ranked defenders were John Terry (12) and Rio Ferdinand (13). The highest ranked goalkeeper was Peter Cech (17).

From this top 100 list, I decided to make an XI. I decided on a 4-3-3 formation. Player rankings in brackets.

GK: Peter Cech (17)
RB: Gary Neville (54)
CB: Rio Ferdinand (13)
CB: John Terry (12)
LB: Ashley Cole (14)
DM: Roy Keane (9)
CM: Paul Scholes (7)
CM: Frank Lampard (6)
RW: Cristiano Ronaldo (2)
ST: Alan Shearer (3)
LW: Thierry Henry (1)

Post your own alltime Premier league XI.

EDIT: For some reason the magazine version and the website version have slightly different lists.

Keane and Vieria as a midfield duo would be fun viewing.

I think TAA will surpass Neville in a lot of pundits eyes before not too long.

Neville has to be up there with Cantona as the most over-rated Premier League player ever.
You're right about Neville but not about Cantona who might've been a bit overrated in his own time but is now underrated IMO. Not that he'd get into my side, but.

The RB problem is solved by just picking Irwin there, which means the Cole vs Irwin debate is avoided.

On a side-note I remember thinking at the time that for about the first four years of Cole's stint at Chelsea he was 'temporarily' out of form and everyone acknowledged he was out of form but no-one noticed this had been the case since he joined. He did get better again later but I think he had about two good seasons in total out of 7 or 8 while he was there. The odd good game obviously, quite often against us as it transpired, mixed in with a lot of mediocrity.

When I watched some 90s season reviews over lockdown one thing that stood out was that Cantona was much better than I thought he'd be. I'd always suspected I remembered him through childhood-tinted glasses and he was a bit overrated but nope, definitely not.

I think he was a bit overrated at the time tbh. I remember in around 2000 he was voted the greatest United player ever.

But still, he was a genuinely great player. I read recently that until KDB came along, he had the best assists to games ratio since the Premier League began, and his goalscoring record was excellent too for a bloke who was never an out-and-out striker. His first touch was excellent and he had a right foot that could thread the ball seemingly wherever he wanted. Set against this was a lack of pace but as you say, whenever I watch old games one of the first things that strikes me is just how good he was.

Anyway, my side:

GK - Schmeichel

RB - Irwin
CB - Ferdinand
CB - Terry
LB - Cole

CM - Vieira
CM - Scholes
CM - De Bruyne

RW - Ronaldo
CF - Aguero
LW - Henry
