Baggy Green ball tampering: Bancroft, Smith and the Aussie "Leadership Group"

There've already been reports that they're preparing for Paine to hand over to Smith in a few months time, maybe after the ashes. Smith didnt exactly look distraught that Australia had been embarassed at home by India's C team.

Have nothing against Smith coming back as captain.

The whole episode has been over the top and there is no need to mete out any more punishment. Second chances are good.

Only hope Australia learn from it in the long run and change their attitudes towards sporting conduct, esp towards other teams, and esp when they are not in the best position in a game, and not use the over the top punishments to claim some sort of high ground again. It seems to have made a difference in the short run. Let's hope it sticks.

Will be very interesting to see the Aussie trio's numbers pre and post Newlands and compare the drop, if any, with other players.
Numbers are:

Cummins pre-Newlands: 25.10, post: 19.72
Starc pre-Newlands: 28.17, post: 26.06
Hazlewood pre-Newlands: 26.00, post: 24.77
Lyon pre-Newlands: 31.76, post: 33.21

Decline in all the quicks (and ball tampering is to the advantage of seamers in general), though the bowlers are in their peak right now which isn't the case with their pre-Newlands figures. And only Cummins has a significant discrepnency anyway.

In which case Smith should never return to the helm as the skipper of his national side ever again. When you're not completely aware of what's happening around you as a skipper you don't deserve to be one.
tbf I don't think any Australians here think he should be captain post-Paine. I certainly don't as letting it happen is a significant flaw to his leadership.

In any case I don't think it's a certainty he'll captain, I think they've also tried to groom Cummins as captain.

Alas it's pretty much impossible to avoid a Newlands captain unless you try a Lee Germon style punt or give it to Marnus (who I think wouldn't be a great fit for it).

Ban Lyon for 10 years as he was clearly benefiting from the tampering.

Ban the other three permanently , surely cheating and still sucking is a far worse offence than just cheating.

I don't think you'll find many people here who disagree. Certainly that's my view.

Apart from the ability to score runs, Smith wasn’t a particularly good captain anyway

No idea why there’s a push to return him and particularly after SA

Probably a case of the other alternatives being questionable. Warner banned from captaincy, Marnus lacks seasoning, the other bats aren't secure in the team and there seems to be an unwritten rule about the captain being a batsman.

Khawaja is back in the shield runs and just captained Qld to a shield win, what's stopping CA from bringing him back to open with Warner (which has always been his best position In tests, bite me).

Gives us a solid captain and gives pucovski time to get his injury **** figured out and see where his future lies instead of rushing him back in because our alternate opener is Harris. Seems like a win win to me. Could even lead to pucovski getting a chance to settle into test cricket down the order at 5/6 with green.

1.Khawaja (C)
2.Warner
3.Marnus
4.smith
5.green 5
6.Head/Pucovski
7.Carey/Inglis +
8.Cummins 3
9.Starc 1
10.Lyon 4
11.Haze 2
Looks extremely strong on paper. Doubt it actually cause Langer has a hate boner for Khawaja but a man can dream.
