If they played Santner at home don't see any reason but to play him in England. He may not be out best choice spinner but still young enough to develop into one.

Either Ajaz or Santner has to play if we're looking at full time spin option.

Yeah, NZ don’t need a holding spin bowler with Wagner in the side, especially if Lord Colin is fit.

Picking Ajaz for the first Lord's test seems kind of stupid.

I care..... but not that much about this specific England series. The WTC will become more and more prestigious as time goes on, being the first name on the Cup is way more important than winning a random 2 match series on the schedule, and that's being generous in assuming a specialist spin bowler (Patel) rather than the allrounder options of Ravindra/Santner would increase our chances in that series in the first place.

With that being the case, it makes more sense to give match practice to the XI that's in contention for that specific test against India. Ajaz would only be playing the first test because Boult is a bit late in arriving, later on he's not going to replace any of the 4 automatic fast bowling picks in a real full strength XI. So you play one of Ravindra or Santner is you want spin, preferably the former because Santner is ****.

WTC is huge. Still some distance away so not feeling as much but closer to the finals we'll feel the buzz. Another opportunity to set right our finals record. Looks like we're destined.

That said we can't go to the finals without the spin option. Yes India is good players of spin but traditionally spin bowlers play a massive part at Rose bowl South Hampton. We may even have to play two spinners you never know. I think Ajaz will play a part.

Which of Southee, Boult, Wagner, Jamieson are you dropping for Ajaz?

I doubt it will though. I'm just mindful of how instantly improved Jamieson's bowling became once NZC changed the design of its four-day/five-day ball (went for a darker red with more pronounced seam).

I think Wagner and the Wagnerball method has actually been somewhat underwhelming in some English county stints. 40 wickets @ 38 for Essex (2017 and 2018 combined), 32 @ 29 for Lancashire (2016) and 10 @ 73 for Northants (2014).

Likely Wagner... The rest are not droppable but the first two tests should give an indication. Unless they take a punt with Ravindra or Santner and one of them bowl real well.

whoever peforms worse of southee/boult/jamieson in the england tests makes way. wagner's role is important, even in england. we can't just select for days 1 and 5. i make fun of england a lot but even england produce batsman friendly conditions.

A 3.9 ER man for Essex in 2018, mind you. One has to be open to the prospect that it just gets very messy with him on a gentle English loam with a Duke in his hand.

An actor playing Macbeth may actually saunter up behind Neil in a lot of English pavilions and start whispering "it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing". He really hates that ****.

What if Boult misses the England tests, does he slot right back in for the final?
Yep.

And Jamieson to me is undroppable. We've seen that, generally, Asian batsmen don't have the same handle on bounce. Jamieson had one bad series, which was against Australia who had no issue with how he bowled. Haze took 17 wickets at 19 against India this summer. Big tall bowlers do well against sub-continent sides.

So if Patel plays, yeah it'll have to be Wagner. You don't drop an in-form Southee with a Duke either.

Yeah, Wagner plays. English pitches don't take a lot of turn in early June anyway, and their test pitches tend to have a bit more pace and bounce in them than your standard county goat paddocks.

I want us to win the WTC and beat England in a series at home after a cracker series last time we toured.
