Also, great to see Ferguson back hitting high 140's (according to the commentators anyway, the speeds don't seem to appear on the Spark graphics).

A top 4 of Nicholls, guppy, Kane, Conway (assuming Rosco won't be around at the next WC.) Doesn't strike fear for its power hitting, and Latham at 5 doesn't help things much either. Maybe the bowlers can keep them below 330, England and India are both fielding subpar attacks this series.

ive been pleasantly surprised with conway's white ball strike rates given he's a touch player. it is early days since he's only faced windies, pakistan, aus A and bangers but he's been finding the boundary at will.

world cups tend to favour cake as well. nicholls top scored for NZ in the 2019 final and kane/ross managed the semi.

i agree with nz fan that guptill might be pushing it to make it to 2023. he's all about eye and timing, so once that goes in his mid thirties he's toast. i doubt the boss will make it to 2023 as well.

Looking at how India are batting right now gives me shivers. Same with England. Both keep attacking consistently no matter the situation of the game. I guess that's the way to play in India. We'll be all right with the current side against the likes of Pakistan, Bangladesh but India and England are different beasts. The thing is both teams have proper quality batters that have no fear. They play proper shots and look to score of good balls all the time. I reckon we need a change in mindset. Don't have to be reckless but not be ultra cautious just because the ball turned a bit. Fast bowlers will be brushed aside unless you can bowl at over 145k consistently. Attacking spinners are the way to go.

I think conway will be up for it. Kane no question about his quality, he'll figure it out. He knows it all. Latham will be all right too I guess. The rest I'm not so sure. Last thing you want is players trying to hold on to their spots rather than impose themselves and win games. We need good confident players like Conway. Not reckless but confident proper players that grab opponents by throat and not let go. We'll know in a year's time where we stand. Exciting times ahead.

Guppy and Taylor are/were the two top order batsmen capable of achieving those 150+ scores at a consistently high strikerate which India and England seem to specialise in. Willing to bet at least one of them will make it to 2023 but even if they haven’t lost their ability they’ve never been that great in the subcontinent (though Taylor had good tour batting in partnership with Latham in 2017).

Young seems to have the ability to play the hitting game, so might be able to fill this role in the top 4 if given a consistent run, better than Nicholls. Ravindra obviously is a major talent, but given NZ just don’t play much ODI cricket I don’t know how much of him we’ll see before the next World Cup. Phillips and Seifert should ideally be pushing for spots but aren’t quite there yet. It’s a pity someone like Neesham hasn’t kicked on as well as he could have, the couple of opportunities he received batting at 4 in Australia a few years ago he looked quite comfortable.

india start as crushing favourites for the tournament but im not more worried about england than normal. remember nz and india are completely different conditions, so if they pull out strong batting conditions we also get those conditions plus we have the better attack. england are obviously a very good odi side but i don't think much has changed.

we're playing the true tripwires right now. bangers are nz in australia level bad in our conditions but we'll be playing their game in 2023. they're going to disappoint somebody from SENA who isn't used to being disappointed. hopefully they knock out australia so we don't have to deal with our mental block at all.

I'm still certain Nicholls isn't the ODI option we need at the top. One hell of a Test player but he's not an accomplished accumulator and he's not a power hitter. Can't see his identity in ODIs.

It's probably not the right idea and it takes him away from where he's been so successful already but Conway would be such a good foil for Gup as opener. Obviously has the technique to do it, gaps the ball just incredibly well, not afraid to go over the top, if Young is going to kick on at 4 (he's not near there yet I know) then Conway Gup Kane Young to me looks solid.

If he drops Tests, maybe. I don't see him making it. He's just slowing down too much. To be fair to him, playing 3 ODIs the whole summer hasn't gone his way but he's had a very barren season for CD and NZ. I see he was saying he's still got ambitions to make the T20 World Cup side too, which obviously is the mentality of a star...but given he's never been a fixture for our T20 side and his record doesn't exactly yell at the selectors pick me, that's a bit hopeful too. He's one of my all-time favourites but I feel like time is catching up on him.

I say this knowing that I'm generally wrong, and he'll have a couple more huge years for us.

our games were never going to be 320 slugfests on anything but total motorways because our bowling was too good. the same goes for india and australia. englands bowling seriously lifted for the tournament as well, and they haven't really been able to keep it up consistently to that level since. mark wood had 6 weeks of unprecedented goodness.

our ability to make 320 was mainly curtailed by having both power hitting openers in the slumps of their lives. taylor can smash it, and obviously our triple allrounder combo at 6-8 like a swing. you need that boost at the top though.

I think so too, if Taylor is really serious about playing the WC he'll need to drop his T20 dreams at once. That said he's a legend and has the right to chose when and what he plays. His experience is invaluable. Kind of agree what he said recently, he has nothing to prove to anyone. Everyone else bar few need to as they don't have the international experience yet outside of NZ. I'm expecting Conway to come through fine, looks like a player that is not going to leave any stone unturned and has meticulous preparation.

Watched half the Eng v Ind inning and they were saying it was like 40 degrees with no wind. That sure is a tester no matter how fit someone is. Wood was England's best bowler. Every ball he bowled was 140k+ When you have to do that for like 10 overs it's like a torture. Bowling pace in NZ is a breeze, you could get through 8 over spells without breaking a sweat. It is equivalent of bowling 2 overs in India I guess.

You guys are worrying too much about hypotheticals. Boult is very good under the lights in India and that gives you a bit of an advantage even if you are only defending 280 odd. I feel Southee could get the ball to move too in those conditions. As long as your batsmen don't go chasing 350 and get themselves out for 180, you will be fine.

Yeah, the 2011 WC may have been a long time ago but is still indicative IMO - despite India posting 370 in the opening game against Bangladesh and those 600+ runs in the tied game at Bangalore, the batsmen didn’t have it all their way. And a very modest NZ side were competitive enough in the knockouts.

Ironically that side had a big hitting top 4 (McCullum, Guptill, Ryder, Taylor) but it was the less intimidating bowling unit of Southee, Oram, Vettori and NcCullum which kept NZ afloat.

Have to say, from the couple of times I've seen Lennox bowling, he's looked pretty calm and solid for an inexperienced player. Not quite as young as you'd hope. Rarely get those 18/19 year olds breaking through here.

Always have the knack of punching above the weight in ICC tourneys doesn't matter what the team looks like. That said gone are the day at least IMO we are there to compete and do our best. Now BCs are expected to win. Maybe barring vs India in India and Aus in Aus expectations are we are there to win and not to compete. That's quite some change in expectations since say 2014.
