ODI WC is definitely much more important than normal ODI series. But I wouldn't call them meaningless.

Is AUS -SA ODI series decider match of 434-438 meaningless ?
Or IND - AUS ODI series of 7 matches in 2009/2013 meaningless ?
These ODI series generated lots of interest in many countries at that time. However some may disagree

The series where he channeled the ghost of Lance Klusener. Tbf he did better than Zulu in the World Cup, winning it for Australia with the ball.

Yes they are. They're the definition of JAMODI series

Ganguly did excite and give fans some hope as the partnership between him and Sehwag, often back away to the bowlers gave Indian fans something to smile about. After that, it was really Sehwag or nothing.

The toss was won by India too, many debate whether bowling first was the ideal option in a world cup final. Maybe the battering by the Aussie bowlers earlier in the tournament was playing on their minds.

Duckworth/Lewis did seem to also intervene as clouds threatened the match later.

But Australia had the mental edge that day and they just outclassed India that day.

It was a pretty amazing tournament for India apart from the 2 defeats to Australia TBH. The media back home were just tearing into Ganguly’s side following the NZ tour, no one seemed to think they’d get past the first round in South Africa. The pace trio of Srinath Zaheer and Nehra in particular were magnificent.

Overcoming *that* Australia side was a bridge too far, but I don’t think Indian memories of that tournament should be defined by the finals alone. From being also rans during the 90’s World Cups, it was a sign of how far things had changed.

India had changed from Azhar, Jadeja, Mogina, Prasad, Kuruvilla, Ramesh, N Chopra, Bharadwaj and the likes to a new young side. Kamble was given a chance again for the knockout tourny in Kenya and Sharjah Cup but disappointed. Fresh new faces like Yuvraj, Kaif, D Mongia, Zaheer, Bhajji, Nehra, Banger, new keepers such as Dahiya, Ratra, Dasgupta, R Sodhi, Sriram, Laxman, Badani were given chances.

India were number 8, last but bottom around late 2000 were too many duds were playing. For India to do well in South Africa 2003, it was the turnaround in captaincy, India started to do well when Ganguly took over, won the series and stopped Australia in 2001 and reached many odi finals during the 2000-2005 period.

I seem to remember there being quite a bit of discussion about that decision both during and after the game.

There was overnight rain, a blowdryer was used and Ganguly said there could be purchase from the wicket.

Maybe it was a prudent decision based on how good the Indian seamers have played and the pitch conditions.

Unfortunately the Indian bowlers barring Nehra bowled way too wayward and seemed too nervous.

Btw, Andrew Symonds took 2-7 off 2 in that final with the ball. Darren Lehmann got a run out and 2 catches. Lee, Hogg, McGrath and Bichel all took wickets.

Bevan was the only passenger that game.

I still don’t understand India’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss after all these years..

Could it be something else was going on behind the scene?
