ENGLAND SELECTORS UNDER FIRE

England selectors, Li and Len Pratt, came under heavy criticism before the game against South Africa. The press and supporters alike were critical of the decision to drop captain Michael Vaughan, who scored 47 and 131 against Sri Lanka, while retaining Marcus Trescothick who failed in both innings. Vaughan was replaced by South African born Andrew Strauss who takes over the reins as captain. Despite scoring 61 and 26 not out against Sri Lanka, Graeme Thorpe was also dropped, replaced by all rounder Paul Collingwood whose bowling at this level is questionable. The other change made was Steve Harmison being replaced by Simon Jones.
Li Pratt claimed that he and brother Len were simply applying a 'horses for courses' policy that had brought unexpectedly good results in the past. Len Pratt added, "Players are not being dropped. They are being rested."

After a poor showing with the bat, Mohammad Hafeez has been relieved from captaincy duties in the hope that he regains form. Shoaib Akhtar also moves up the order after a glorious innings of 29.
