How old is he? And is he a realistic chance to bat 6 for Australia in tests given the next series you are likely to play is the Ashes?

Abbott's bowled like a drain this game. In general he never looks as good when he's not leading the attack. Not exactly good from a "might be a useful third seamer in a Test if there are a couple of injuries" perspective.

He just turned 34, and yeah I think he is given he was in the squad against India and also the squad for the tour of South Africa that didn't go ahead. I think he's basically fighting with Head for a spot in the first eleven as it stands.

I remember seeing him bat in the 2013 series in India, I think it was the Chennai test and IIRC his technique was a bit found out against spin in the first innings but he came back in the second innings have done some adjustments and looked very very solid and composed in the second innings when it is easy for most SENA batsmen to be rushed and chaotic, usually (like Ollie Pope in the last test). I guess he got injured and stuff and fell out of the side rather than being dropped due to actual poor form after that?

Right result in the end. Would have been bull**** if WA lost after declaring 5 down and 100 behind in the first innings. Wouldn't have been a deserved win for SA.

While yet again Lyon and Cummins unable to bowl a side out on the final day

he's sort of had the maxwell experience whereby he's always brought in undercooked for the final test of an overseas tour in which we've already lost and they've felt the axe needed to be swung - never had the consistent run in the side that he deserves.

fortunately getting the captaincy should change that

I don't think he's ever deserved a consistent run in the side, and he's a 30yo+ player with a FC average in the mid 30s which as I've said before, is not exactly promising. Maybe the only time he deserved selection was when he was selected, vs India in 2012-13 when Watson wasn't bowling. But also: he had only scored his FC ton a handful of months before. I can't even recall why he was picked vs SL that one time.

That India tour, he scored twin 50's in the first game, and he hasn't passed 10 in his 3 tests since.

That's it for sure and I wouldn't favour him getting picked right now either. Given that Green is the one we're looking to be our six and Moises isn't a better alternative than Head at five.

Long term think green will end up at 5 and head at 6, which does slightly change the dynamic, but don't think that effects Moises. Green at 5 means he's not stuck batting with the tail too early and head at 6 allows him to play his natural game a bit more.

I'd be okay with him getting picked now, given I think #5 might actually suit Green more anyway. I wouldn't exactly be expecting a late blooming gun though. Picking older batsmen with FC averages in the 30s has never really worked out for Australia, or realistically anyone. There's improvement and then there's mastering the art of mediocrity.

It really is slim pickings though. Head could probably use some time out of the side and there are no decent candidates otherwise. I'd pick Head but he'd be my second choice, and I can definitely see the argument for Head staying on the bench for now.

If they're going fit anyone in for Head I'd prefer Maddinson over Moises. I haven't seen him bat for the last few years except the bbl so can't really see if his game at fc level is really different to the slash and hack he still shows there. Also it could be said he'd be batting out of position considering where he's scored his runs for Vic. Though he might have a Hussey like talent for batting anywhere in the top six.

I'm very much in the "Victorian home runs don't really count" camp when it comes to Maddo, especially given what his record had become before he moved and what some of his innings look like these days. I'd pick Moises ahead of him for a middle order spot for sure, but they're both kind of in the same camp:

Young batsmen who were supposed to destroy worlds but kind of just didn't who have seemingly improved lately with significant question marks over the improvement, and the "young" part not true anymore. In an ideal world you'd be able to file them away as "didn't make it" unless they started having Voges-esque seasons, but it's not an ideal world.

not counting head, the 3 are pretty obviously usman, maxwell & maddinson, which I think just so happens to be the 3 with the best FC averages, with patterson not considered due to time away and the poor results on his return

if you rule that usman and maddinson are to be considered for top order only, maxwell and henriques are probably the two, and look henriques results have been good, and they've often been game changing runs scored at a quick rate. I don't hate the idea of him at 6, but also, the chances of success aren't great.
