I'm struggling to remember a worse test number 8 than Archer. Even Caddick in the infamous 1999 line-up had more about him than Jofra.

there are reasons for a pitch being bad beyond the toss! i personally don't think that's particularly important - though it is a factor - and the main thing that determines whether a pitch is good or not is what SS points out. once it starts becoming a question of sheer luck and you can't reasonably distinguish between skill and chance on the scoreboard, then that's too far for me.

like, i think root batted about as well as it's possible to bat on this pitch. he made 19. i personally think this is pretty borderline but it is slightly difficult to take entirely seriously for that reason, although england have mostly batted like poo.
OS criteria for rating pitches
1) Entertainment value
2) Level of physical danger
3) How important it makes the toss

Nothing else actually matters and I'm right.

Whatever it takes!!!
Those gaps in the stands where sun is creeping through can't be good for visibility for the players, I guess? Glare issues for batsmen and fielders, I feel.

Yeah he’s genuinely terrible. Can’t believe he’s made tons in fc cricket. Looks like he doesn’t know which end of the stick to hold

Largely agree but I'd generally like to be entertained longer than two days.

I also think rating individual pitches is hard because I don't really mind this pitch but if we had a whole five match series of them I'd probably start getting annoyed. If pitches like this are rare then they're fine, but if they're relatively common then I start agreeing with SS.
