Hope he is banned but he'll probably escape again. The way he carries on after every minor decision that goes against him is disgraceful. Very Australian.

So thankful that the prick wasnt there in Australia for our glorious win, wouldve been a little less sweet if he'd been carrying on like a moron there. Well we wouldnt have won if he'd been there, but you know what I mean.

Think Murali Kartik let off a not-so-subtle barb in Rahane's direction after Kohli got to his fifty. Something about how you expect hundreds from Kohli every time he walks in to bat and call him a failure even when he's averaging fifty, while lesser players get a pass despite making a score once every ten innings because the expectation isn't there.

It’s especially jarring at home when there are a host of good to no name players who could come in and probably do at least what he does, probably better.

First innings was crucial mind...

Yea it's time to groom people like Gaekwad and Jagadeesan for that mo slot. We will need replacements for all of Rohit, Rahane, Pujara and Kohli in 3 years time.

He's got Kohli's backing though so he'll stick around for a while. Just strikes me as not being all there. So many mental gaffes after the MCG knock.

A chief reason why India will not emulate anywhere near what Aus of 99-07 did is this lack of killer instinct when it comes to batting. Under Kohli, the bowling has been revolutionised. But batting largely continues to be a Buddies Club.

After the BG trophy, people were taking up the bench strength of the country. Well not disputing that, but thst bench strength is useless when the first choice players get ridiculously long ropes and never put under the pump. Rahane has had a very long rope and I don't see him getting challenged abytime soon, particularly given Kohli's reluctance to be seen as someone who took out potential captaincy rival. Well the truth is Rahane isn't first choice test material any more. He was an.emabrassment playing spinners in these conditions, and was made to look like a dimwit by Ashwin.

Look how easily Sundar, who looked supremely comfortable against both spin and pace in the couple of tests he got to play thus far, has been jettisoned because he couldn't bowl. This despite having outscored Rahane comfortably in the last two tests they played together. Just need to start thinking a but outside the box. Sundar has trained to be a batsman from his childhood and has played half of his FC matches as an opening batsman. He is only 21 years of age and its not as its too late to consider him as a top order batsman. And forget the records watching him perform against the likes of Cummins, Hazelwood, Starc, Anderson, Archer etc especially with India under the pump, its quite obvious the lad can bat. His bowling may be considered as an added advantage at worst or really useful on the kind of pitch we saw in this test. Not to mention the left hand advantage he brings to the mix.

But the powers be are so Conservative they can't even imagine giving this a shot. It took a moment of genius and unorthodox thinking that resulted in India finding its best ever opener after Gavaskar, Sehwag.

Ultimately, India dropped a guy who averages 56 in tests and retained a guy who averages a grand 37 in India, one who can't play spin to save his life and is already nearly 33.

Ridiculous.

Wow, very elegantly put.. I had the same thinking today, but couldnt have explained this better than this.. Just think about this, Rohit sharma is a proven match winner (in ODI/T20 at least beyond question). On his day, he can win a match on his bat.. So IMHO his spot is fixed.. Now who do you partner him with?

Yes, shubman/mayank are talented. But they are very similar to him in style and being right handed, so the bowlers line/length/plans are easily planned and executed againt both at same time. A good attacking left hander really makes it difficult for the opposition bowlers and captain to just hatch a plan and excute it so easily against a good right/left combination. And Washington Sundar in such a short career has shown the glimpses how big a threat he can be.. He hit the ****ing Cummins for a Six out of the park in his debut ffs..He can play the fast bowling verywell and he is fearless. Must be a decent against spin as well, So why not give him a chance.. Just consider him as a batting all rounder who can bowl a few overs and give ashwin/Jadeja a break.. on his day, he can pick up some wickets as well..

It is not just runs but the impact he creates is very important... A brisk 30-40 runs in the top of the order sets the tone for an innings. Pujara gets a little more time to settle and a few early boundaries demystifies the oppn bowling and gives confidence to the middle order. Now invariably we get 10/1 most of the time overseas.. What can go worse than that? Try something different please..

Okay so while most of the top.order has clicked one way or other for India, I still think they are still a bit far from their best, barring Rohit

Gill - Seems to have his first reality check with an unplayable Anderson delivery. Of course his talent is precocious. Also slight concerns with regard to his approach to spin on spin friendly pitches.

Kohli - played two exceptional 2nd innings innings' but haven't gone and made a bug daddy 100.

Pujara - Half of his dismissals have been utterly unlucky so got to cut him some slack. Good thing is he has been positive in his approach.

Pant - Need to score big 100s should be the next step in his evolution.

Rahane - Biggest disappointment. It begs belief how he continues to get selected in the world's best team despite let downs after let downs. Of course he has that minimum talent which ensures he gets that 100 once in a Blue moon but just cannot be a factor in home tests. Vihary was the logical choice to replace him but he is injured. India cannot continue to waste a precious batting spot by continuing to play him.
When Kohli rightfully gets banned for being a moron, Rahane makes this team as a specialist captain.

I really place no stock in this historical anachronism about how we should show ultimate deference to the guys responsible for holding hats and giving LBWs but Kohli was really pushing it. I think he thought he could get away with more because the umpires were Indian and BCCI are always going to back him over the umpires. And I think that's what left a bad taste in my mouth - it seemed intimidatory. I think if the umpires were neutral, I would be much more willing to dismiss it. Deserves a ban IMO.

He was also getting irate with the umpire when he clearly ran onto the pitch (even though it may not be on purpose) and they (rightly) gave him a warning for it. I think a one match ban is not unreasonable
