*Official* 2nd Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, 13 - 17 Feb 2021

But he was charging in during that spell. His pace is highly technique-dependent at the point of release, but his action is also highly repeatable, so the only other reason for fluctuations has to be his rhythm running in on any given day.
So you think it’s more a technical aspect rather than a desire thing? I understand how important rhythm is for all bowlers and like I’ve said previously I certainly give him a degree of leniency in this Test if he’s feeling his way back up to full throttle.

Oh, definitely a technical thing IMO. I get how it looks when his pace falls off but sometimes you can't bring your body to do what's needed. Which should be alarming of itself in Archer's case because he looks and moves like a thoroughbred athlete and shouldn't be having these off days so frequently. But that's an issue for the bowling staff to deal with and shouldn't be used to call his commitment into question.

Would Ali score any less runs than Lawrence at 3? I fear for Bess if we lose the toss, I’d quite like another spinner. Though having said that the last time I saw Ali bowl he could barely get through his action!

Yes. Not only does he average less than 20 in twenty Tests - since mid 2017 - but he sucked in the top order even when was making Test runs. It's just not an option at all IMO. I'd probably rather bat Bess himself there at this point.

For sure, but so often it is 'he is bowling this speed or this speed' rather what the ball has actually done. He sometimes bowls bouncers that look horrible that don't actually show up as being that quick. Wood is the opposite, bowls 92mph ball that look totally innocuous.
Agree to add to that point, the ball that got Rohit out - 85mph, the ball that beat Rohit 2 balls before the wicket - 88mph, first 3 balls in Archer's 3rd over 89mph dealt with comfortably. A small sample size but took two photos of the speeds in the over so far when they came up on the screen as I knew conversation about Archer's speeds would pop up - it always does when he is not taking wickets

Whatever it takes!!!
I think its interesting that England seem to have perfected filling a team with roles and then identifying players for those roles. A very LO strategy they have successfully adapted to tests somehow. That is amazing. At least with respect to bowling, I think it is something other teams will start doing. India are already doing that sometimes coz the team views what Ishant and Bhuvi bring to the attack to be something similar, so only one of them plays. I assume the same with Shami and Umesh away from home, if everyone is fit. Bumrah is the only one we can't replace at this point.

How on Earth does a guy lose so many tosses. Can't do much as the home side, but surely if he just called 'Heads' every time in the 2018 series in England he'd win atleast 2?

Mate, there is an art to tossing the coin.

Ricky Ponting had somewhat honed it and would often get tails (as people often call for heads)

I dont understand this. The captain only calls when it is away games right? Any toss Virat loses at home is because the other guy calls it correctly. How is that Virat's fault? lol

He obviously doesn't get enough practice tossing at home. Sack Anushka.
