England favourites, but what a bloody good knock from Pant there! Reminded me of Brian Lara's batting in Pakistan.
Made the same preposterous comparison to a friend a while back. Huge difference in quantity and general appetite/temperament for runs obviously, but as left-handers go, don't believe I've seen one approximate Lara's essence as closely as Pant.

If India can bat anywhere near lunch and score another 100-150 runs then England will have a tricky time knowing when to declare.
Hard to see anything but a draw in this game.

I suppose it depends on how much the pitch deteriorates by Day 5. I think you're right that England won't risk a generous declaration, especially after Pant's innings today, but if the pitch becomes really tricky then even two sessions might be long enough to take ten wickets.

Whatever it takes!!!

And how long before Rahane’s spot in the team will be questioned? Playing one dream-like inning and then flopping in 10 others seems like his forte. How long will India keep persisting?

His like Faf; inspirational leader but not a great player.

Averages 28 over the last fifteen odd innings at home ffs. He's sort of become like old furniture that you don't want to throw out because it has nostalgic value. That and the droopy-eyed demeanor means you'd rather push old ladies down stairwells than drop him.

In fairness he scored a historically important ATG century after 36 AO two test matches ago and deservedly has enough rope till the end of the year IMO considering the away tours to England and SA coming up - if he makes at least a few contributions here and there.

At home though, we are playing 4 tests against England and 2 tests against NZ this year. In case Pant keeps batting like this and also shits the bed keeping against spin which is not unlikely, Rahane's place will get trickier and trickier and I won't be surprised if he is 'rested' for a few of the home tests to play Pant as a specialist bat in case Rahane doesn't play any significant big knocks.

Very demotivating comments from Pujara about Pant after 3 consecutive very good knocks at Sydney, Gabba and Chennai
This is out of context spin out of a largely complimentary take by Pujara.

“It [the aggression] wasn't part of the game plan. We just wanted to bat normally. When we play in India, the scoring rate is always on the higher side. Rishabh likes to take the bowlers on. It is fair. That's his game and that's the way he should play.

“It does [put pressure on the opponent]. There's a good left-hand-right-hand combination which frustrates the bowlers. The scoreboard keeps moving. We have batted enough. It's been a crucial partnership between us, and I hope this continues. I love batting with him."

"We talk about the shots he can play and avoid. He still has to learn a few more things. He has to put the team in a commanding position first. He is also missing out on hundreds. He will learn from his mistakes. There are some shots which he needs to avoid. He needs to be a bit more patient. If he bats longer, we will put up a bigger total.”

How good is Rahane as a batsman as compared to Mark Taylor who was probably the best Australian captain since Border ?
Is making Rahane permanent test captain feasible?

The biggest obstacle from a 'feasibility' POV is that I don't see Kohli resigning or getting axed from captaincy any time in the near future.

Enough of this captaincy debate ffs. Kohli has firmly cemented his place and it will take more than few consecutive poor series before he gets sacked (if that ever happens).

It’s sort of like how people wanted Tebdulkar to retire after he was in poor form for last 2-3 years. People were debating whether he should go but everyone knew deep inside that only way he would go is on his own accord.
