Had it been Australia they'd have been 380ao by lunch yesterday.

It's the first innings of a four test series. There's a lot to be said for batting as long as you possibly can and making your opponents bake in the heat.
Now England may have to bake for next 2-3 days and then the 2nd Test starts after 3 days break. Short turn around for them. Not India.

If India can do that, then good luck to them. That would have been a problem regardless of what England made in their first dig, and it's less likely now that they're already tired.

Bad takes from centurymaker all over this thread. A run rate of around 3 is perfectly good. Every big win by an overseas side in India in recent times has had them put up a big score batting either just as slow or even slower than this, whether SA back in 2010 or England themselves back in 2012. Only the last pair could've batted somewhat faster but that's just getting into nitpicking/optimization territory. They have 550 at 3 rpo, that's a winning platform.

Whatever it takes!!!
I have been away at a resort for a much needed break along the beach some 30 kms south of the ground and feel really refreshed finally after the last year or so. :)

The pitch looks flat and the soft soil base has come to the fore IMO. I also thought England, as they always do, have come in better prepared than any other touring side. It was an excellent toss to win. And while Burns got himself out, I think everyone else wore the bowlers down really well and Root was just a class apart, and so was Stokes when he was attacking. For India, what I feared did happen as I felt none of the top 3 bowlers (Ishant, Bumrah, Ashwin) looked at their best on day 1 and then England went after the newbs which was very sensible strategy. Root especially is amazing in that he can go after the bowling without even looking like he is going after the bowling.

But, having said all that, I think India have actually done really well not be further back in the game than they are. Conceding less than 300 in a day TWICE in a row on THAT track is actually a pretty great effort IMO. All of our bowlers looked so much better yesterday and gives me hope that we will get better and better as the series goes along. This game obviously depends on the batting but one thing about this side is that they will come back from however dire a situation they find themselves in, and I expect that to continue over the next 3 days. :)

There really is nothing* worse than reading people post lame #intent takes on the forum as thinly veiled justifications for their own frustration that the game isn't progressing as quickly as they'd like while they're watching.

*And I don't just mean in terms of CW posts. That really is the worst thing in the world.

In these kind of conditions, difference between a result and a drawn game is not a lot. Teams who push for a win save about a session or more by batting quickly when they are 400/4. India now needs to bat 7 sessions over 2 innings, rather than 8 sessions. It is the like making india bat 90 overs in final innings vs just 60 overs. This is what England may have missed out on when they were cruising at 400/4 with 53 overs remaining when Stokes got out.

A less conservative team would have reached 550 with 15/20 overs to spare against a tiring attack in batting conditions with fast bowlers barely in operation. Just over-used Ashwin.

Ofcourse it is good for india so Im pleased from that pov. But disappointed because 5 days will have been wasted for nothing.

Think the game has had a wonderfully sleepy quality myself, could hear myself humming the Malgudi Days theme at various times, but that's a comment more on the deadness of the pitch and the empty stands than England's batting. 3 rpo is good going indeed.

Yeah, this game reminds me of the game Amla ground us to dirt in the first two days and then Sehwag decided to just get his second triple.

But I do think playing out the entire first innings is good strategy from England. No point in leaving runs on the table right now. Perhaps they could have tried to score faster but like I said, I just think it was good bowling from India that pulled them back a little bit. Better be 555/8 than 480 all out on this track.

Hope Pujara scores 100 (370) and grounds down both the English pace attack and intent brigade out of the series.

What if the kids consent to being in cages PEWS
I refuse to say, in this thread -- because I say it in other threads and I get standing like-reaccs -- but in this thread I won't say it... but I make the best kid cages. I'm going to make kid cages great again.

You can't drop Pant but he really is not a Test standard keeper. Playing Saha + Pant might be the way to go. And daily post reiterating that no one should ever play three spinners.
