Grooming International Team Captains

Whatever it takes!!!
I came across this article today about Pat Cummins hoping to lead NSW in the remaining Shield games.

It got me thinking. With the amount of cricket being played today at the international level (and I include IPL here), especially for all format players like Cummins etc., it is obviously becoming impossible to get them to play enough FC cricket or any other form of domestic cricket where they can learn captaincy. State and Franchise sides wont select international regulars as their captains coz they wont be available. And IPL sides prefer Indian captains mostly anyways. There is really no way someone coming into the team can get an idea or feel of captaincy at the lower levels unless it is someone who has already been leading their FC side and has only now broken into the national side, which again means you gotta give them a while before you can make them captain.

How do you guys think teams can address this, especially with very little practice/FC games scheduled on tours too? Do you just groom them within the side and hope they can step up when the time comes? Really do not see any other way it can work now or in the future.

Captaincy is a mix of leadership and managing. The former is something you can't teach. It automatically comes. The latter can be learnt on the job, and also results form a more formal command structure.

The key is to identify potential leaders upfront and then make them deputise under the current captain for a while. This is the model which Aus used to successfully pull off in the 90s and 00s.
