Border-Gavaskar Trophy all time XI

Yeah the tactic used by Smith and attempted by the rest was to never be beaten on the inside edge and never chase balls. It kinda paid off.

Hate to break it to you but Sachin averaged 35 in Australia outside the SCG, over 15 tests in 5 tours. The SCG brings his average up to 53 in Australia, given he scored half his centuries there. In fact, in most of those tours the SCG test was a dead rubber.

Or to put it slightly differently, Smith scored as many tests in India in a single tour as Sachin did away from the SCG in 5 tours.
I am aware of the dichotomy in Tendulkar's stats in Aus but I fail to see the relevance here. Tendulkar faced some real ATG attacks with a pathetic team around him (for at least 2 tours) not to mention the many times he was sawn off by Bucknor and Co.

Fact remains that on the most result oriented surfaces, on this tour, Smith came up short and well worked out by Indian bowlers - to a plan. If anything, it exposed that with excellent planning and execution, Smith can be made to look ordinary. Also it established that the margins to achieve the same are so less - the moment it tips in the slightest in his favour, Smith will seize it make it really count - a hallmark of a great player.

I regard Smith as rightfully the greatest test batsman in a long time. Just that Indian bowlers elevated themselves to levels seldom seen before to thwart him successfully.

It was implied earlier that we should take out Smith's SCG runs and 2014 runs to compare him to Tendulkar. My implication was that what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

It's absurd to take out anyone's runs at the SCG. I actually had no idea that Tendulkar was so ordinary everywhere else in Australia tbh.

I have no idea where you got this implication from. I dont remember bringing Tendulkar into the discussion even once.

Smith is an excellent player of spin. I still remember 2013 tour when he was nobody player then and commentators were praising him and how other Aussie players should learn from him.

Smith did in 2013 tour what Kohli did in last 2 tests in 2011/12 tour to Aus.

@stephen
Please stop it.
SCG test was neither dead in 2003/04 ( 1-1 tied), nor in 2007-08 ( Aus 1-0 up ) or 2011-12( Aus 1-0 up )

Most of us are trolling here . Nobody is serious here.

Remove Smith's 178* not out on the road in Ranchi where barely 2 and a half innings were completed. And his average in India falls from 60 to 43!! So its easy to make anyone look mediocre.

Considering the disproportionately high number of not outs the dude accumulates because he doesn't fancy getting out while batting with the tail, unlike guys like Kohli who would simply try to hit out.

Smith's average without his precious not outs is 54!! He is contributing 54 per innings. Not out doesn't lead to extra runs, so he is not adding 62 as his average may suggest.

To resurrect a meme from the 00s.

Bad posting is bad.

Taking out Smith's 2014 runs was stupid af to begin with. Guy is the first picked in any BG Trophy team and you all deserve the ensuing rancidity.

Maybe McGrath ahead of him. He's still averaging way more against the best attacks India has ever fielded.

In any case this is a stupid line of posting and all of you should be ashamed. Shades of 'all of Gavaskar's runs should be excluded and therefore he sucks' reasoning.

54 should be comfortably above his peers I guess ?

Whatever it takes!!!
I understand the overall point about people who play for not outs but that is an argument for Chanderpaul, not Steve ****ing Smith, FFS. Guy just finds ways to score runs without getting out, which is as simple as it can be about great batting.

Steve Smith is probably the most unselfish top order batsman in the world. Have seen him get out numerous times forcing the pace in his team's second innings.

Almost every century of his I've watched he's gotten himself out going for quick runs with the tail. That partnership with Siddle and then the Sydney ton define Smith's selflessness.
Ashwin maybe? No alternative to Smith, Tendulkar and McGrath. The rest could be left out arguably.
