If you push Smith to 3 everyone gets to bat at their best position. Smith 3, Sachin 4, VVS 5, Clarke 6 (they can swap tbh).

That's not good logic at all. I can't think of one Border Gavaskar Test Cummins has played where he's been mediocre or poor. Maybe Sydney 2019? Cummins vs Gillespie is very close though.

I think if personal performances don't contribute anything positive to the team, there worth is largely diminished.

For example despite the wickets Cummins took in the last series, he didn't bowl a single decisive spell like, let's say Hazelwood bowled at Adelaide or Bumrah bowled at the G.

Youre working your way back from the result which isnt a good thing to do. His performances contributed massively to his team because without him they'd probably have been demolished. His spell at adelaide was almost as good as Hazelwood's too.

Cummins has been the standout player in this series, not just bowler. The series loss does not diminish his brilliance, in fact he elevated the game to a very high level. You could see the effort he put in the last hour of the game as Australia's only genuine hope. He didn't disappoint them and it is unfair to call him out for whatever Australia failed to achieve.

Cummins in the first innings at Sydney was an incredible effort. Set up the match perfectly and he cannot be blamed for the failure of Lyon, Starc etc to chip in sufficiently to bowl India out, or Paine dropping catches. Was great at Brisbane as well.

Yeah Cummins was incredible. Looked like taking a wicket with every ball. I mean he took what, 4/45 or something in the second innings at Brisbane. If *anybody* else had have pulled their weight Australia would have won handily.

Again I am not debating what Cummins has been able to achieve individually, last couple of BGTs he has been Australia's go to bowler.

However it is also a fact, that in the 10 test matches Cummins has played against India he has just one 5-wicket haul, compared to that a guy like Hazelwood has two in this last series alone.

This further reiterates the fact, as well as Cummins has bowled against India he has failed to provide that decisive knockout punch, to seal the deal for his team.

Tendulkar helped win/draw BGTs both at home and away against an all-time Australian side, pretty much on his own despite being a part of pretty ordinary team.

This criticism of Cummins remind me of criticism of Tendulkar in the old days - doesn't win matches, hits 100s and gets out - ie not convert to big 100s etc.

The more one deliver, the more expectations go up I guess.

Cummins walks into this side and if not for McGrath he would be the first name on the sheet too. Not only has he been the best bowler on both sides he was also often the one holding fort in batting terms in the previous series.

It's not an actual team though, it's a bunch of individuals who have played a decisive role for their respective teams over the years in BGT.

Not a single bowler from the current Australian attack, can realistically claim to having done that.

Gillespie apart from 2004 series in IND wasn't the standout quick in any B-G series iirc ( Haven't checked stats just remembering how they played)
