4th Test at the Gabba, Brisbane, 15 - 19 Jan 2021

Surely leading IPL teams can't ve benchmark of Aussie test captaincy credentials?
Which is why I clearly specified a different format. And was talking about his leadership credentials in general.

Warner at 34 and most importantly post sandpapergate has ruled himself out of any leadership position in Aus.
I am not advocating for Warner to be made the test skipper. Just highlighting how his leadership credentials go up a notch under a different culture and setup.

Also he genuinely might have changed after the ban and introspection, plus age - which reflects in him being much calmer in IPL.
He has been a different player (and a person too on the field) when it comes to IPL much before the sandpaper incident. The way he has been leading SRH hasn't changed because of that incident. It's been the same since his early SRH days.

Hmm I missed that. I know he regretted coming back, but I'd always understood/heard that he'd felt obligated to do so because he was still captain, not because they basically gave him an ultimatum.

I completely agree that he was done by then, though. A shell of a player after that aside from two very emotion-driven innings.
He had the desire to play on though, but Cricket Australia drove him to play when he was neither fit physically or mentally which had further ramifications on him as a player and leader. In most other working environments that will be seen as workplace harassment but in professional sports such things get brushed aside.

CA basically stood by and did nothing when Warner and his wife were smeared by South African crowd and players alike, which lead to the crazy Sandpaper mess.

So in a nutshell Cricket Australia has never been too good to authoritative figures within the team, so Paine is kind of a god send for them.

Speaking of Clarke, why is he no longer in comms? He may not be for everyone but I kinda liked his style..

Whatever it takes!!!

It could be VVS Niceman effect, tbh.

I know one shouldn't be greedy but in hindsight could we have won the 3rd test in Sydney if we had a fresh non injured batsman in place of Vihari ?

Think he's turned a corner for real after Cape Town. Stoic isn't a word you'd normally associate with Warner but he certainly appears to be at a different stage in life.

Think India were consistently the better side over the first two Tests. From Sydney onwards they were always playing catch-up, which is understandable considering their depleted resources. In the full context of the series, the general thinking (conscious or not) appears to have been to remain within touching distance of Aus at all times so that the one stand of defiance or genius really paid off. As close to a rope-a-dope strategy as I've ever seen in cricket, just brilliant.
