*Official* England in Sri Lanka 2021

Sri lanka will rue their terrible batting in the 1st innings. Another 100 to the target and they would've been in box seat here

Paradoxically I feel that Bairstow is a good batsman for this situation. Needles run out of Root, his proactive style at the crease is what's needed

You almost wonder whether a backstop might be worthwhile in these conditions. Extras already looking odds on to be England’s highest scorer.

Alot to like about Embuldeniya. A really simple, compact action and imparts good revs. Still very early in his test match career but hopefully SL have faith in him to deliver the goods regularly
Definitely the best of the lot imo. I see that Akila Dhananjaya has been cleared to return to international cricket so perhaps he will slot in soon enough.

A little more application on that first day and SL would have been in a prime position with a 150 run target.

Yeah, even if England chase this 3 down I reckon Root's not going to be a very happy chap. They've played sloppy cricket at times, but if they can win out in SL well below their best, then I suppose that could bode well for the India series

All credit to Sri Lanka for fighting back tbh. I think this just shows that they are not, or should not be as bad as that first innings performance suggests. I think they'll go well in the second test, and England will have to be a lot better to beat them.
I do like the fact that England are getting a significant test before touring to India, which didn't seem likely to be the case on the first day. The fact that Bess and Leach haven't bowled that great but have definitively improved their accuracy as the game goes on should bode well. Leach especially was coming in without many overs so I can understand the lack of consistency. I wonder if they might play Ali, Bess and Leach in the second test just to give them all a go.
